If were talking really old war films nothing beats The Guns Of Navarone.

As for other just old films that are really good:
The Day of The Jackal (awesome awesome film - dont even put it in the same sentence as that piece of shit Bruce Willis flick the Jackal!)

The Italian Job (the original is just a complete and utter classic)

The Labyrinth (Nuff said)

Nosferatu (This 1922 silent film version of the dracula story is amazing, especially when you remember its 1922! Awesome sfx for its day and would have absolutley scared the shit out of its audience back then!)

Godfather I & II are both excellent.
I prefer Part II as it focuses on both generations.
Scarface is a classic, Al Pacino's performance is brilliant.
It is has all the things a successful movie needs,
ie. money, wealth, chics, drugs, voilence
Ahhhh yeah that's wat i'm talkin bout!

Saving Private Ryan was pretty average IMHO, 20 minutes of intense (admittedly good) action, and then 2 1/2 hours of American glory doesn't really excite me.

It made me proud to be an American. Until I realised I wasn't.

Spot on mate. De Niro is my fav actor and its very sad to see he has cancer atm. I hope he beats it coz I'm awaiting more good movies from the legendry actor.

Casino and Goodfellas are also great movies, but they are amercian view on cosa nostra. Italian Maifa compared to American-Italian Mafia without its traditions (apart from eating pasta) is very different and thats were Capolla made the movie work. SOmeone said above a movie needs money, wealth, chics, drugs, voilence etc etc. I disagree with that and if Godfather had all those Hollywood bullshit action scenes it would of never won that many oscars.

I grew up in this part of the world and I see he tells the story like its a true story, and it easily could of been. Its also great to see that viewers get introduced to real Italian culture, family, traditions and customs, and not what Sopranos sells it for (money/gold/chicks/pizza/pasta/mafia). This is my fav movie due to De Niros awesome performance as Vito.

Brother is better IMO, but, yes The Godfather 1 and 2 are both Brilliant films.

Apocalypse Now is probably one of my favourite films of all time, although, i don't think Francis Ford Coppola aimed to create the best "war film of all time". Regardless, the Vietnam War suited this film perfectly.

what makes you say that? i enjoy watching it, i think its a great movie and very powerful. i don't really think it glorifies america or anything. those soldiers could have been from any army, they just happened to be american.

i agree with lethal on 'the guns of navarone' though

Mainly too many lingering shots of patriotic Americans staring mistily into the distance and American flags flapping in slow-motion

Not as bad as Independence Day though...

Only the first few minutes of Saving Private Ryan is awesome but it's just one stretch of boredom.

Enemy at the Gates was just one TV and damn what a movie.. damn that main actress in it is bloody cute, she is gorgeous!!

pffffft saving private ryan isn't boring, its great
i don't think there are many lingering shots of patriotic americans staring mistily into the distance either webbie, i think its quite the opposite compared to a lot of american war and action movies.
i just watched that enemy at the gates too, it wasn't bad
