I'm staying out of the debate...but I agree 100% with both of those statements! I think Toronto's got plenty of int'l calibre talent in its residents like Deko-ze, Addy, Mark Oliver...

well

contracts and residency agreements are by territory not by company. because a company i am a resident for in one city expands to another it does not automatically make me a resident in the new city...

Dude, get a fucking clue... I said they were residents, I never said they are going to shut down the Guv. Who does the Guvernment have as their resident(s)??? Mark Fucking Oliver... not bad, but not great either, and to suggest he's even in the same ballpark as the DJ's I mentioned would show how little you really know. When a promoter can have that level of talent as their resident dj's then just think of the type of talent they can pull in on any given night (I've seen it happen many times). If the docks (with Spundae/GK) went up against the Guvernment head-to-head on Saturday nights, the Docks could easily steal the Guv's client-base. All they have to do is provide a comparable sound-system, comparable light-show, and a better DJ lineup. The first 2 are most likely in place due to the recent renovations, and the last will be a joke with someone like Spundae/GK backing it. Whether or not Spundae/GK backs a Saturday night party remains to be seen.

Why does the Guv typically bring in many of the top DJ's on Thursday nights and not Saturday nights? Its because they don't have nearly as much pull or respect as the big promoters in the global clubbing community. The big boys get who they want first... they have the most money, and they are the promoters that everyone wants to play for. The level of power and influence that Spundae/GK has dwarfs anything the Guv can come up with.

btw, Mark only spins from 11 - 7 (8 hours).

You give me 8 hours worth of vinyl and a month to learn it and I would have no problem keeping that place going... you know nothing about me; you've never heard me spin; you don't know my style. You draw conclusions based on nothing. Contrary to your belief, playing at a club like the Guv is not much different from playing at smaller venues.

I have never heard a bad set from a System resident. And I agree that TO has alot of great residents... some of which are starting to get the recognition they deserve (ie. Luke Fair).

Come by on a normal saturday night, stay the whole night and then give me a proper review please.

I'm guessing I've seen Mark spin over 40 times of which at least 30 were marathon sets (since back in 98/99, the Guv rarely brought in other DJ's to spin). Of those 40 or so, very rarely have I ever walked away from the club impressed with the way his set went. The reason I keep coming back to the club is because the vibe is second to none and being with my friends makes up for my opinion of the music.

If thats not good enough for you, I have a number of friends who have partied at the club on a more consistent basis and they all share the same opinion as I do. And these are all people who know the difference between a good set and a bad set.

That has nothing to do with my original post. My post was related to how long DJ's typically like to spin. I never talked about them playing longer sets... If I was a top DJ getting paid a shit load of money to play a 3 hr set and the next person isn't ready to go when I'm finished then I have a right to be pissed. If I play over then are you going to pay me for that? If you were paying me $5K an hour and I played an extra 5 minutes, should I ask for an extra $400 because I played those 5 extra minutes?

My guess is that most DJ's if you asked them nicely would have no problem playing a few extra minutes. I can only think of a select few (eg. Oakie, Lawler, Boy George) that might throw their hands in the air. Can you please throw out some names of people that have caused you grief. Thanks.

If you ever bothered to watch him you would realize that he almost always throws a chill-out CD on to warm the place up... Rarely will you see him mixing anything before 11pm.

Jayx1, Why dont you tell "your mother" what you do? In my opinion Mark has more upfront music and a stronger selection than many of the spundae residents. G&D as producers are without a doubt fantastic but as dj's need to grow. J Bonham does nothing for me at all, but thats just me. Max Graham is solid and deserves his props. lets not shit on Mark since he has outshined many guests at Guv over the years and does a good job at supporting the music. Guv could easily have z103 in the house with Biggs and Danny D. Just like the Docks did in the past.

Bottom line its a nice change for the Docks and TO
