LKD I had NO idea things were like that in the asian/indian countries. I knew there was always enormous pressure on the kids (as I see in my school in the asians) to overachieve, but I never thought their school system was so strict.

The fact of the matter is (as a few others mentioned) that just because you don't do well in school doesn't mean that you can't be passionate about anything else in your life. It's great that my parents taught me there is more to life than that. I mean, I am aiming to do really well in school but if I don't become an MD I do have a back-up plan, nor do I doubt I will be any less happy in life.

the same goes for the german schooling system. hence, i.e. japan is often compared to germany - not just education-wise, but also economocially.
when i had to move back two years from grade 7 to 5 (for 7 years) after i returned from canada to germany ... i almost failed calculus and physics towards the end; - so basically, if you have two 'almost fail', that accounts for one total failure, meaning you move back a whole year, not just having to repeat the two courses (or the one), but the whole year with 13 subjects! thank god i came back to canada for my grade 12 so noone ever found out! hihi! ...but yes, talk about anal over-achievers!
...no surprise there then, hm? like having the sword of democles hanging over you ... or being in a monopoly game ....

When I was in highschool my parents never asked to see my report card. They never pressured me to go to university or college. In public school I did very well, so they just let me do things on my own from then on.

I am very hard on myself in school, and I get really mad and upset if I get under 80% (for one reason cause I will loose my scholarship, but also cause I just need to get high marks, I have just always wanted high marks). When it comes down to it, I do this for myself, and not for my parents. That is the way it should be.

I feel so bad for these kids, being stressed out about getting amazing marks all the time, and missing out on so much !

There was a girl at York a couple of years ago from hong Kong that hung herself after an exam in one of the lecture halls.

My friend saw them pulling the strecher out. Dont know if it was exactly the exam or something else, but it was after an exam late at night in a lecture hall out of all places

I'm not at all surprised. whats worse is that schools in India rank students on their report cards (1st division, 2nd, 3rd ,4th,...etc ).

There was a point in my own life when I got sick of studying. It felt as though I was in school to compete against friends rather than to learn. Having parents who made it look like the world was coming to an end when I ended up with the second highest overall marks made it worse. Luckily, after a little rebelling on my side, my parents realized they can't make me do what I don't qant to. They could care less if I dropped out of school today. well, I'm sure they do but they wouldn't say a word to me.

I think parents tend to act like this because education in countries like India is not free. They pay a lot (some poor families put down life-savings) to send their children to a good school.
