okay, yes, i've spent the last two months reading and re-reading modern and classical fiction.

and, no, i dont like Kerouac. and i would normally refuse to have any sort of relation with any sort of mention of Grisham, especially a positive one; it's just a prejudice of mine. but there have been some good mentions in here and i'll go with that.

read mostly all of Douglas Coupland's stuff recently, except for Hey, Nostradamus!:

Life After God
Shampoo Planet
Microserfs
All Families Are Psychotic
Polaroids From the Dead
Generation X

all genius.

Read mostly all of Irinve Welsh's stuff recently as well, except for Filth and The Acid House which i just haven't been able to find.

Trainspotting
Glue
Ecstasy
Porno
Marabou Stork Nightmares
(quite crap, this one)

highly recommend those two authors.

then, recently, i started reading in reverse chronology, starting with
1984 by Orwell, then on to some Aldous Huxley, Dostoevsky, currently Nathaniel Hawthorne and i plan to get as far back as the Etruscans someday.

love a lot of the stuff mentioned in this thread, including Palahniuk and Catcher In The Rye
Palahniuk has a new book out next month, by the way. Stranger Than Fiction, which is a collection of short stories and other non-fictional writing he's done over the years. it might include Guts which was the short-story that he read out on his Diary readings and made people pass out constantly.

aside from the already mentioned, i would recommend
Don't Read This Book If You're Stupid by Tibor Fischer. british writer, dark british humour and dark british outlook on society overall. short stories. find it.

I'm reading Hyperion by Dan Simmons now. Classic sci-fi. Recommended.

Donald Trump - How To Get Rich ... brilliantbrilliantbrilliant

Alternatively if that's not to your taste:

Alvin Toffler - Future Shock ... seminal techno book!

(I haven't read The Third Wave yet though but I really should find a copy of that and dig in)

I've just finished reading "The Musical Explorer" by Guy Noble - It's a light hearted take into the concepts and trends of the musical world - great reading.

That's next on my list after I finish the Hyperion books. Supposed to be brilliant.

great thread! i also just started koontz's the face. koontz is pretty reliable if you want a good non-intellectual superficially chilling read that has a disappointing ending. check out "door to december" by him. it's a great wtf read. Odd thomas is good too.
i am so happy to see so many palahniuk fans out there. i was first turned on to "Survivor" about 3 years ago, then i quickly became an addict. i will say, survivor is his best so far. invisible monsters is awesome, but i thought choke was a waste of such a good story. aside from the obvious authors like vonnegut and kerouac, has anyone come across some good authors that can stand up to the writings of palahniuk? just curious!
