you should also start recording and making your own loops

don't worry too much about getting the best quality. all you need is an SM57 (which runs about 70 bones).
to record to your computer its best to get a good sound card like an M-Audio Audiophile, but you can make do with connecting an SM57 to a DJ mixer via XLR and taking the recording out on the mixer and bringing that into your normal sound card.
theres alot of programs you can record with. what matters is the plugins you have for them. its amazing what you can do with compression, reverb, flanging, and all the FX
one way you can get a beat is just record yourself banging on a counter top. compress the hell out of the recording and then noise gate a low tone side chain so that when the beat hits, a low tone comes into the mix giving it alot of punch.
its amazing with what you can do with recorded sounds.

I imagine that that is exactly what aphex twin would do to get all his sounds.

the Shure SM57
its prety much the standered mic for music recording. pretty much all purpose. pretty cheap.

i think theres a couple other models like the SM55 and so forth. i don't know too much about the differences between them all.

probably. alot of electronic producers record many random sounds and compress and Fx the hell out of them.
I know James Holden just has a dinky little keyboard he uses to record.

Yes i do that with drums..... if I wanted to go around recording all sort of sounds inside and outside what would be the best thing to use?

The hardest part for me is adding vocals. I'm currently working with my vocalist on a track and I'm finding it really hard to get them to sound right in the song.

I can imagine how much that would be a pain in the ass.

"ahhhh.... could you sound a little bit more.... I dunno.... different?"
