Modern fireplaces are nothing more than fireboxes vented with triple layer flues through wood framing. Brick not even necessary. You can put a lever in them to vent the incoming air from outside or from floor level in the room to recirculate and heat up existing air. Fans circulating behind the firebox will vent hot air into the room at hearth level or higher if you run the ductwork. Hearth level is best since hot air rises and the higher you vent it, the colder the room will be underneath the ducts.
