Well of course they wash it away. I would get an autograph on something like an album, record, flyer etc etc. That way I'll have it forever. The only way to have have it on your body permanently is to go to a tatoo artist (shortly after getting the signature) and get it tatooed on. Which is what one girl that I know did with Brandon Boyd's (Incubus' Singer) signature.
