It seems common to me, especially for those with broadband connections, to leave your computer on 24/7 but to also make good use of the power-saving utilities built into most modern PCs. Such as, the monitor will automatically sleep itself off after an hour's worth of inactivity, and similar for other components.

I think it's reasonable, provided that your computer isn't the bulk of your power bill

it's on 24/7. restarting puts unneeded stress on your hard drive.

i reboot when i have to, once every 10-14 days.

i go to control panel > power options (the shortcut is on my desktop/quick launch bar), and "turn the monitor off after 1 min" when i'm away, to save power. that's also what produces the heat.

i once saw someone on instant messanger who had been idle for over a month
left the country and left their computer on

personally, i always leave it on
goes into powersave and shuts down everything pretty much after like 20 minutes though
never had any problems with it

I've had an uptime of close to a month before. The only time that I reboot is when I install something that requires a reboot or when I do a Windows update that requires a reboot. Other than that, it's on all the time unless the power goes out of course.

Same here. My impression is that computers are designed to be left on for long periods of time, and turning them off and on regularly can shorten the life of some components. The general consensus though seems to be that it doesn't make much difference.

considering computers become obsolete after 5 yrs I wouldn't worry about the components wearing out.
