Woot! Sad but true...

Yup, hip hop is fun... I like building phrases and sentences out of lyrics and stuff like that. Haven't done it for a while now but it's a challenge.
Also when I mix hip hop I try to think of it like I'm trying tell tell a bigger story or convey a message or even educate.

I used to DJ break beats and stuff and turntablist skills come in real handy there too.

I always like to use keys in what I'm doing as I still believe this to be the way to rock the party so to speak.

Cheers
Nem

recently I've tried out RnB/Hip Hop. I think its really not that hard.

if theres a decent amount of bars of beats, then mix it.

if there aint decent time then loop the bar thats before the vocals, and then slam the crossfader and precisely on time undo the loop.

Has anyone tried mixing Jagged Edge - Lets Get Married (remix) and sounded really well?

how do you do it? I use the fader start on my djm-300 but it really doesnt sound that good.

'Disco' Tunes

How do you guys mix 'disco' tunes? You know ones like:

Madison Avenue
Jamiroquai
Kylie Minogue
Daft Punk - One More Time
Stardust - Music sounds better with you
Spiller - Groovejet
Modjo - Lady

I find that if i try and mix the tracks even when I mix harmonically, it still sounds povo .. so I've tended mainly when mixing this style to 'drop' tracks like when mixing hip-hop .. or sometimes i just cut the bass on the incoming track and let it play for a couple of bars then slam it in with the bass up full. How do you guys mix these typa songs?

Saw him live once, rather unique compared to what I normally listen to.

hiphop mixing is all about track selection.. if you are just throwing a random track in after something, good luck. however if you have it planned out and listen for tracks that would mix well, either with one starting with heavy bassline and the other ending with no bassline, etc etc... also its very fun to do creative things such as take an acapella of the song you're going to play, while on the other deck playing the original for an echo'd effect, while messing around with the acapella deck. or beatmatching an acapella of a different song to any particular instrumental.

I think it's okay to drop tracks in that are different speeds, but you may hurt the flow/energy of the set. What I usually do is play 3-4 songs with the same speed and try to mix them well, then change it up and drop a faster or slower song depending on the direction I'm going. I don't spin hip hop too much so I write down the BPM, since variations can be big. Oh yeah, match up songs using the hi-hats every two beats, not the bass.

A mix to practice on is J Kwon - Tipsy into Chingy - Right Thurr. They mix well

One thing I don't like about current mainstream hip hop is that you have a handful of producers (lil jon, kanye west, timbaland, neptunes, r kelly, JD) making 50%+ of the "hit" tracks, so a lot of it sounds the same. But it's what people want. *shrug*
