The law was made out of concern for the industry staff's health right? So why can't they wear oxygen masks or something?

All these arguments about how it's disgusting for the public have no base since clubs are private establishments.

Is that a fucking joke? Forget the nonsense about oxygen masks, how does the fact that clubs are private even enter into it? Cigarettes are a regulated substance just like alcohol and the government has every power to decide who can use them and when and where they can do it.

If it were an unregulated substance like water or sprite then you might have something here, but as it stands, you're way off the mark.

But every regulated substance has (or had) a sanctioned public place for its use. This tobacco law has effectively eliminated that. Imagine if one day they use the same arguement to ban alcohol in public places but still allow its use in the home? The way the slippery slope works it could be a real possibility one day. And dont say designated smoking rooms are sanctioned areas because the city is banning them on June 1 2007.

The difference between banning smoking in a public building and banning alcohol is second hand smoke kills. Second hand drinking is entertainment.

Just look at it this way...

Say you open a club and every member of the staff is wearing oxygen masks. The staff is protected. Right? You put a huge sign out front reading "SMOKING IN HERE! EVERYONE WHO DOESN'T WANT THEIR LUNGS TO DIE SLOWLY PLEASE DON'T GO IN." You can name the club THE BLACK LUNG if you want to. THe point is, now you have a place where people can chose to go if they are smokers and are ok with it. If the government shuts it down they are saying that people don't have the right to smoke. Even if a waiver was required upon admission, I think a ginormous crapload of people would do so every night.

How about you just not get a job in a club if you know that there will be smoking and you dont like it?

Hello? Common sense people? Does life have to be this complicated?

tell that to MADD. Im sure those fanatics would tell you that secondhand drinking is just as bad as secondhand smoke and argue for the law i just mentioned above paralleling the smoking law. Trust me, you may think its not possible but tell someone 20 years ago that smoking in all public places would be banned in 2004.

Kills who?

The consumer that just signed a waiver saying he/she was ok with the fact that they were going to be exposed to smoke in the club (same as purchasing cigs IMO)?

Or the staff that is wearing oxygen masks?

Well that you can't argue because of the equal employment rights. Oxygen masks, however, are the future.

I live over a pub and since they banned smoking inside everyone smokes outside and guess where all the smoke goes? yup, right into my window. SO i guess i should be out there trying to get outdoor smoking banned as well right? Oh wait a minute, wasnt the pub there BEFORE i was? Oh right, ok i guess i have to live with it then or close the window. What an uncanadian response. I should be mad as hell and calling my local city councillor... oh well.

Equal employment rights? Well there already is. Nobody is forcing you to work there. Sounds about equal to me!

deal with it. There's no smoking in the clubs.

I love it.
