More expensive bike usually means more features and decorations. I doubt its any "stronger" than a bike a fifth of the price.

My hunk of rust takes beatings everyday, and has been for 5 years since I've been using it to go to school for 5 years. Bikes are strong; shocks, extra 15 gears, pretty blue metallic colours are expensive.

I feel the pain. Just bought a Norco Sasquatch and if someone ripped that off...well...it'd be like losing a spouse (as funny as that is, thats a serious comment).

well, you are still not getting my point. Ben's bike wasn't top of the line either, it was 750 bucks. that's avarage for a bike that is not a hunk of rust.

if you want to enjoy biking and not just use it to get from point A to point B, Ben's bike was not overpriced. it was a nice pssession he had.

i could have a shitty computer that has internet connection but i decided to get something fast that i can use for other things. same sort of thing.

some things you skimp on and somethings you own with pride.

another example, i have crappy pots and pans. i know they are crappy because when i use my mom's pots and pans they actual don't burn food and cook it properly. my mom bought good ones, i have shitty ones since i'm not at a level of cooking skills to warrant a good set but they do the job.

Dude, if you expect to participate in a Formula 1 event, YOU DON'T BUY A CIVIC !

Similarly, in Ben's situation, he was participating in Mountain Biking events - thus he didn't buy a $10 bike on a garage sale.

its more expensive because they're lighter and stronger with excellent gears, etc...

but both drive fine in the city

I had my $10 bike stolen, which I bought at a garage sale. This happened at Jane n Wilson about 10 years ago. It didn't have breaks, it looked like shit but someone had to cut my $5 lock and run off with it as well my friends 300$ bike.
