Blik, I have to say I totally understand your frustration and anger over this. Why someone has to do this VIP thing is beyond me, if you have people who join chat and are bothersome then kick them, ban them.. But to set up a private chat seems like you are putting a bridge across from the regular users..
I have a story to tell, Blik I hope you read this. I've been a member of the Shroomery since 1998, and back then the whole message board felt like a family. All the posters got a long, and there was such a feeling of community. But then the site started to grow, and before you know it the trolls came, and of course also lots of newbies and unfamiliar faces.
Well the old 'family' started to go into chat more, the old school users posted less and less and made chat their homes. Many of these people started to talk of the 'good ole days' much like old people do when they are blinded by the fact TODAY is a great place to be. The rift between chat and the message boards became worse and worse over the years.
In fact some of the oldest members of the community posted once in a while derogatory things about the community to try to remind us of how cool things used to be and how everything sucks now.
What this is all about is some people don't like change, some people enjoy living in the past and forget why we all came here in the first place
I've made a few friends off this board that I talk with on ICQ, I don't post as much as I used to, but I won't stop just because there are so many new faces, and less of those people I was used to seeing post.
Any rift in a community is bad, to set up a special chat room only shows that this mentality is bad for the community.
You make good people feel unwelcome and not appreciated, thus Blik's anger over this. Blik has contributed a lot, he's a moderator for gods sake, yet he's not good enough I guess.
The Shroomery has been through all this, and since I took over the website I made it a mission to bring the community back together. Its been very succesfull so far, many of the chat regulars have started posting again realizing that the community is what you make of it.
I hope you TA's learn a hard lesson from my community, its not worth forming lines in the sand, afterall isn't this site about the love of music and people sharing our passions??
Blik, thanks for voicing this, I know it will piss of some 'cool' people, but you are right, this is silly and hopefully over time people who support a private VIP chat will realize how bad that is for a community.
