Well, the first decade shouldnt be too much of a problem, its mostly a clean up and understanding job. The pre-teen/teenage years that will be dreadful for you, especially if the baby is a girl because than you have to deal with boys. Dont be harsh, always try to explain everything to them... and yes, sometimes you have to be hard on them theres no way around it, I dont approve of beatings. You usually want to instill most of the manners at a young age because thats when they are learning the most, remember babies mimic their parents, so how ever you act and speak - the baby will pick up on it and eventually develop that way. Basically, focus on the younger years because those are the most crucial developmental years. Read, study, teach them as much as you can when they are younger, it will help them through school.
