Breaks to my knowledge has never really been considered mainstream, it's always been on the fringes and embraced by the underground and true fans, simply because of the structure of the beats which a lot of people find hard to groove to. The 4/4 in comparison is a lot easier because of it's simple, repetitive beat pattern.
