I agree that hockey uses aspects of several sports, including football...then it's played on ice....and that makes it more technical and skillful than many other sports.
But to use your argument...Here's a field...here's a ball...both around already, so lets kick the ball around the field, and to make it interesting, we'll sacrifice the losing team to the God's (things they also did on a regular basis)...so I argue that it wasn't any more innovative than any other sport developed. All sports use aspects of items that are already in use, or available and develop new rules as it evolves (or devolves in the views of many)...i.e. American FB, vs Rugby, vs. Football Football.
I can make this argument with any sport that is out there. I don't argue which ones are better than others...but I tend to follow/play certain ones these days.
(and I assume you meant what we call soccer over here)
