Dude you're not even thinking here. I am not freaking talking about the physical act of putting the record on the table. Nowhere does it say this in any of my posts, anywhere. Capiche? "Drag and drop" doesn't have a damn thing to do with it. Just read my post instead of taking things out of context! You're being pretty narrow-minded in assuming that all that goes into DJing is flipping records and beat-matching them...?

Right, because I'd have to be a professional DJ to have any understanding of the mechanics. Okay, I'm not a DJ, but I've sequenced on both hardware and software and I can say without hesitation that hardware is a FAR more natural way to do it and is pretty much the only way to go when the music starts to become more complex. Fruityloops and Reason drive me nuts - I don't see how DJ'ing would be such an incredibly different science.

In Descent 1 you could do pretty well just using the keyboard too if you knew what you were doing and didn't fall into traps in big rooms where the circle/strafe/fire/roll/shoot combo could be used on ya... Back in the day of using ihhd to play via a shell account + dialup to emulate a lan connection and pray for <250ms latency.

Tables are physically in front of you. If you're just beatmatching 2 slow trance tracks, sure, laptops are great, but as the complexity of the music increases more and more, it doesn't take a pro to see why a laptop would just be getting in the way.

Yea, but that complexity you talk about is only a factor in a small number of globe trotting dj's, the other 85% of them do just fine with a laptop and maybe some cd's.

And no, Q-Bert might not be using a PC right now, but he does use cd's, so give technology time and I'm sure he'll be innovating use of them.

I find it funny how people who like "electronic music" are usually some of the biggest geeks, but when it comes to performers using technology - they can be the biggest snobs about them embracing technology.

I dunno... I've used both... and both have their high points and low points... Decks are much easier to control because you can be doing multiple functions at once... Computers are great because everything can be 100% precise... perfect cue points... perfect beat matching... perfect effect controls... but you can only use one or two controls at a time.

You guys are still forgetting one thing.....
Sound quality on vinyls is still superior to CDs and MP3's.
Nothing beats analog for wave patterns!
I prefer having DJs not use laptops or even CD mixers as it kinda takes away from the mystique of DJing, but what really pisses me off is when they throw on a track that is of such low quality recording that it sounds like shit on the usually very large sound system of the club.

i agree with some of you when i say that i really believe using a laptop, even cd's less'ns the experience by the dj. I understand having to play some cd's due to the song song being released, but besides that, i love the hole oldschool, and tangable aspect of vinyl. And i've used cd's before and its so much easier. As for final scratch, its exactly like using vinyl.....without the vinyl. Theres no difference besides the fact that u don't have to literaly take off the vinyl. Don't get my wrong, i think all these advancements in technology are mind blowing,
But i guess i'm just oldschool, " VINYL ALL THE WAY!".

blah blah blah.. unless you can see what the DJ is playing, I highly doubt anyone can really tell just by sound whether its cd, mp3, or vinyl.
