I read a couple of blogs on this, and the dailykos (a lefty blogger) rationalized that the helicopter blew up the vehicle to possibly prevent the looting of communications equipment:
| quote: | That's an easy answer -- communications equipment. Unless things have changed dramatically in the 12 years since I was in the Army, all communications gear is keyed with encryption codes to scramble the signal, and make it difficult to impossible to eavesdrop.
I was in a HQ artillery unit, and we would drill the destruction of "sensitive equipment", which included said communications and encryption gear. We were actually timed on how quickly we got the job done. (The list would also include maps and operational orders, but that's probably not the case here since the Bradley was on a simple Search and Destroy mission.)
We definitely don't want sensitive communications gear falling in the hands of insurgents. The Bradley's crew was too busy trying to stay alive to worry about the gear, so the gunships had to be called in to finish the work, despite the presence of the mob around the burning Bradley.

I don't know whether the dailykos author believes that the ends here justifies the means, but it is a reason for the missile firing regardless. I also don't know whether or not the ends justify the means, and as someone here pointed out earlier, you'd think that after 18+ months or so of fighting, these civilians would get the hint and get the fuck out of harms way, esp. the children.
Regardless, it's just mere speculation as to why. If that wasn't the reason, however, I really hope a worthwhile investigation ensues.
