No one believes manufacturer direct computers are better than custom built. However, there is a misconception that self built computers are cheaper than manufacturer direct computers. In the past, that use to be the case but in the present day, manufacturer direct computers have certainly made their manufacturing process cheaper and as you can see, their prices have dropped significantly. I have had 4 self-built computers before I decided to purchase a skeleton Dell PC, which I later customized. The advantage I get is a warranty that is offered free and less hassle for the same price I would get for a self-built computer.

the only BIGGEST difference between dell and custom computers are that custom computers offer A LOT of space for expansion (such as PCI slots for more sound cards, video cards, Ethernet cards, etc cards that may come out) .. dell gives you a limited amount of space .. also custom computers are more flashy, like those neon lights on the side,

Jamie never specified she likes the bells and whistles but they cost money. I had the impression her budget was tight so I suggested a system that has everything she wants and then-some for a special well within her budget. I believe her system has room for an APG card and 4, maybe 5 PCI slots she can purchase later on. As for the neon... give me a break.

if you like that, and also offer a coolant agent inside your computer, to prevent your computer from overburning .. dell does not have that, because they want your computer to overburn, so you can buy their extended warranty .. hmmm...
|
All the special coolants are only necessary when you overdrive your CPU. Unless Slylee lives in a sauna, her pre-made computer will work longer than she will want to keep it. The comment about the warranty is simply ridiculous. All electronics companies and re-sellers offer warranties. Does that imply all these manufacturers made their product for a short life? NO! Dell, like most companies, have warranties so the paranoid will buy them and they can earn extra money for doing nothing. If Dell's computers were as cheaply made as you suggest, they would not be making any profit because of the cost to repair all these broken computers. I'm no Dell evangelist but they have become the world's #1 computer manufacturer based on reliably and smart business decisions.

hey, are you forgetting that i live in south florida?
i appreciate all your input...i DO like all the cool, pretty gagits that you can add to your pc to make it look cool, but you are right, i am only looking for something cheap now, but also something that i could upgrade later...
*edit* and most importantly, something reliable. i just want to be able to download music, burn cds, do school work on, surf the web...nothing seriously fancy, you know...

you make some good points dude ... you are right that big companies have "finally" figured the point about self-builts, and lowered their prices .. but i still think she should go for cases with like 6 - 8 PCI slots, rather than like 4 or 5 (the usual for Dell pcs) ..
and everyone goes for the fancy neon gadgets .. how come everyone talks about the alien pcs .. the one that says it is built just for gaming .. they do have some tight specs inside their pcs .. but they have the neon glowing stuff on their cases .. these "bells and whistles" don't really cost much .. i think they're mostly under $20. .the last time i checked ..
also, i think there should be a study about a pc's lifetime in a specific location .. i swear the percentages would be high, if one had a computer in the deep south (florida, texas, louisiana, arizona) rather than in somewhere like california, new york, washington, etc ... i think also humidity in the air plays a big factor in a pc's lifetime..
also, she can go for a smaller hard drive with a custom built (say like 40 GB) with a smaller RPm (say like 5400), since she says she doesn't need something too big .. and also, with custom pcs, you have the flexibility of gettings more RAM slots, so you can exapnd in the future, let's say if Windows requires more than 2 gigs of RAM (don't say it's possible, because it could be true..)
but in my opinion, i would go for one of those bigger cases, so i can stuff more internal hard drives inside for the future .. you can never have "enough" storage .. if you know what i mean ..
