The Queen of England is also in fact the Queen of Canada (official title) and is also our head of state. The queen is to Canada what the President is to the United States. The fact that our history roots are British has allowed us to prosper as the nation we are today. Imagine if Spain or Portugal had settled here. Sure we'd be a lot nicer and relaxed but our economy would be in shambles. The US also has ties with Britain but seperation was a long hard and bloody process from which that society is still recovering. This is why they have such a cowboy gun culture down there.
The queen may not be as relevant today but to throw away her image and all ties to Britain would be to forget our very history.
Don't forget, your heroes that you mention were British too. General Wolfe led the British army to victory over the French in Quebec City and Sir John A Macdonald was a British patriot from Scotland.

exactly. The Queen has no real power, though technically she is the Head of State. She is a living embodiment of our past. For Canadians to say "get rid of that old hag" is akin to throwing history books into a firepit. You don't have to sing God Save the Queen every morning or include her in our national anthem, but at least respect it as part of the Canadian identity. She's only on one fucking bill...get over it.

As for Paul Martin? I dont think they are able to make crooked bills. Maybe his face should be on the counterfeit ones. The bills make promises they cant keep. LOL

I heard a new immigrant once say that it offended her because she had to take an oath to the Queen of England who in her words "colonized and enslaved" the country she was from in the past. My reaction? If you don't like it you are free NOT to become a citizen and free to get on the next plane. Needless to say that conversation ended quickly. Imagine if we went to any other country and make such remarks....

If you don't like the fact that this nation was once a British colony settled and founded by British/French settlers, well too fucking bad. Every right and freedom you have in Canada has its origins in Britain. I'm forced to agree about the immigration comment...we can let people enjoy the frutis of this nation, but to ask for respect in return would just be far too much.
She has had no influence on our nation.. its under our british based common law system that we respect her majesty and put hername on our money even though she has had no impacxt on us. He Face does NOT DESERVE to be on our bills. Does that get to your head?
She was born into that position.. nothing else. There are other people like Trudeau that deserve to be on the bill more than that stupid hag
I cant beleive you guys would support her face on our money.. a symbol of royalty. Why should we respect her??? WHYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?!!!!!!!!!!?!?!?!??!?!!??

you obviously dont get it.
Who do you suggest? A hockey player? Yup, what a significant contribution to society. Making millions to play a kids game.
At least the queen symbolizes the past that made canada what it is today. Sadly we are in decline now. I give this country 30 years before we can take our place along side other so called 3rd world countries. The corruption, restriction of freedom, and excessive taxation is slowly killing our once successful society.

well thats a good point i guess. im sure there are some native canadians who would feel the same way.
my point is you asked why people sometimes have a problem with immigrants. I have seen too many immigrants come to our country (often its kids of parents who came and really have no idea what they left) and they spit on our way of life and what we stand for, while still taking advantage of all the opportunity it presents. It just pisses me off to no end to hear people complain about the country and i hear it so frigging often. Just go somewhere else if you arnt happy here. I'm not racist i love travelling, meeting new people and experiencing other cultures (look where im living right now) and my closest friends are first or second generation immigrants. But its just an attitude i hate and its our fault for being too passive.

How is Chile anyways? Make sure you go visit Argentina. PM me if you need some help with where to stay and where to go etc. I practically know Argentina like the back of my hand hehehe
PS: Creamfields Argentina is in a month. I went last year. It's worth the $80 flight from Santiago!

it's all about educating people about the origins of our society and our past. i know the type of people that you're talking about. infact some of them even live in my area. i usually found them at the highschool level. the danger is letting those opinions become generalizations about immigration in general.
the fact that Cyrus King feels that the Queen should not be on our bank notes does not necessarily make him any less of an appreciative Canadian than anyone else. perhaps putting Queen Victoria on the note would have been more fitting.
but think of this, it wasn't too long ago that Australia was on the verge of completely removing itself from the Commonwealth and recognition of the Queen through a referendum. atleast we're not at that stage ..

In a way i can agree with you. What you should realize if you live in another country tho is that it is not easy to just give up your ideals and morals. And i for one dont really care if immigrants have another opinion, i think that is a great part of our society that everyone has a different opinion! if canadian culture is "better", immigrants will sooner or later adopt it.
i do also agree that theres nothing wrong with having the queen on your money, however to blame anyone who critizise that (which i can also fully understand since it is not *your own* queen) to be unrespectful is quite weird imo.
