Stop rendering desicion on how useless this product will be. It's in development stage for gods sake. I wonder if some of you guys can graspe the concept of having a vision which is what this project is about. It's not something you are likely to see for a few years, so it's purpose at the moment is basically to wet the appetite for developers and get them thinking about the future of OS. To hear you guys say it's useless just makes me wonder if you've ever actually part taken in a creative, innovative design venture before. Something tells me you haven't.

Lets give the Sun development team some credit here. I'm almost 99.99% sure they are more intelligent then most of us here.

I for one am quite impressed with this project and hope they can showcase some of this new systems features in the years to come.

SO this isn't even an OS then, it's just a GUI like the one I use at school X-Win for UNIX. If they can make a more stable and secure OS than Windows then all the power to them.

As a developer, I want to see something more useful than writing notes on the back of windows and rotating them. I wouldn't call that "creative and innovative". It's plain gimmicks, crap to get the average dumb consumer interested (no offense to the original poster). It seems to me that you fit in well with this group.

How about showing me speed improvements, or how I can more easily do basic operations like copying files, running programs or scripts etc.?

5) The service pack will have it's own set of security faults

6) Microsoft will annouce a new version of windows, promising to address all security risks and make us wait for another 2 years.

Heh. Open source will always win out in terms of quality...unfortunately it's a little bit like David vs Goliath -- even though in recent years Davids been getting a little bit stronger.

Still, competition yeilds superior products...or so i learnt in my economics classes. We shall see...

you forgot one more thing - a copy of it will cost $300!!

Before i answer any of your questions :

What do you understand by the term, "in development" ? If it means nothing to you, then i really don't think you should continue reading my post.

If you can graspe the meaning of the term "in development" then surely i don't need to explain to you that when the product is finished, or atleast in a BETA stage, only then will you get the answers to those specific performance related questions.

The video wasn't meant to get you to cream in your pants, or switch OS's. It was meant to perk your attention, to get you to think about a future where having a 3D window pane might be implemented. And if you're a developer to get you to start invisioning what possible uses that particular environment will have.

I don't know what the future of this project will be, becuase like you i'm a person on the outside looking in. Does it sound exciting ? Yes. Because any system that is a departure from the 2D of windows is actually the next step forward. I'm not sure how old you are, but there was a time when DOS was the standard, and we worked through a command prompt. Windows was the next step forward. I'm not sure if this is the next stage in developing a true 3D operating system or not. But I'm sure as hell not going to be an arrogant git and say it's a gimmick and write it off as useless before i learn more about it.

You only betray your own ignorance through your posts, specifically when you tell me 15 posts after calling it 'lame' that it's a only a GUI and not an OS. So, you basically saw the vid and decided there and then it's just a cosmetic system, nothing else. Well done, not only are you well informed, you're real smart as well.

Sun has been a big player in the software market, producing innovative software products over the years. I give their development team the benefit of the doubt and 'wait' to see what they come up with before jumping to conclusions like some of the 'computer savvy' people in this thread.

This is a quote that YOU POSTED:

""We first started toying with the concept of a true 3D desktop operating system enhancement tool, or skin, a couple of years ago," says Craig Nicholas, technical support engineer at Sun. "Although Project Looking Glass has been under development in-house for some time, we feel that, if it is really to succeed, we need to have other developers working on it. With their input and expertise we will have a 3D skin complete with working applications in the not too distant future."

The reason Nicholas refers to Project Looking Glass as a skin, and not an operating system, is because it is merely that--something that sits atop an operating system."

Are you trying to piss me off or are you really this much of a dumbass??

^^^

Ok, i'm going to go real slow so you don't get lost here.

I didn't know what the project was before i saw this link. I didn't download the movie either. Instead i went online, and googled the project. After doing so, i learnt that it was a skin, not an OS. I also read a few articles on what the project was all about.

You on the other hand, saw the vid and immediately slagged it off as being lame. Now, after reading my post you're even more convinced it's crap because it's only a skin.

All i'm saying is that this project is in development, and since neither of us have seen what it can do it would be foolish to say it's useless. No, it's not an operating system, it does however sit onto of Linux which is a very stable, very powerful operating system. Given the capabilities of Sun's development team, i'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt before calling their product 'lame' and just a skin before i actually get a chance to see it first hand for myself.

Is any of this making sense to you ?

Just because it's a GUI doesn't make it useless. The idea here is to think ahead, and try to attempt creating something different. Maybe this project won't lead to next big thing in terms of OS. But we don't really know that do we ? Or are you saying you've figured out what this project is capable of doing by watching a 30 sec clip ?

I havn't watched the video, neither will I search on the project.
From people's posts, I could guess how this is going..
I don't think any projects such as these should be overlooked though. They actually do conrtibute to the future of OS' even if they're just 'eye candy'.

Eastman Kodak Co. and Sun Microsystems Inc. have settled their lawsuit over whether Sun infringed on Kodak's patents in creating the Java platform. The two sides came to an out-of-court agreement Wednesday night, before they would enter the penalty or awards phases of a trial in which a jury found Sun guilty last Friday.

Terms of the settlement were not disclosed, and neither Kodak nor Sun would comment on the settlement. But Kodak said earlier this week that it was seeking more than $1 billion in damages from Sun. A Rochester, N.Y., jury found Oct. 1 that Sun infringed on Kodak's patents when it created Java and released the technology in 1995. Kodak is based in Rochester and is the city's largest employer.
