Guys are definitely just as bad. Although I never do anything spiteful, I know that I sometimes am more interested in the chase. I don't try to play with girls emotions and I usually communicate honestly with them. After that, I think it's their problem.
For example, there is a girl I am dating a little bit now that I have known for a while. She just broke up with a friend and fellow dj I know a few weeks ago. We kind of hooked up and have been hanging out a bit. I know she's been kind of screwed over by a couple of guys lately that liked her, but didn't feel the chemistry after a while. I didn't want to be another one of those guys because she really is a great girl, but I don't know that I'm that attracted to her physically. On Sunday, she came out and I told her that we should maybe be just friends. Somehow that turned into us hanging out and letting things move slowly. Then on Tuesday she asked what I was doing and I said I had things to do (finishing a flyer for a party I'm co-promoting) and she took offense, saying I didn't have to hang out with her if I didn't want too. Now I'm in a tough spot, because I told her how I felt, but she seems to be more into me than I am her. I'm doing my best to maintain a friendship with her and not hurt her feelings, but I know where this road may lead. It's kind of a lose/lose situation. We'll see what happens.
