Not in his first election four years ago they didnt. Do you think if 9/11 didnt happen, he would have ANY chance of winning again???? As much chance as his father did. Because when people aren't focusing on safety (by someone who never actually served in combat, thanks to good ol' daddy mind you) and they look around and realize... "hey! I'm out of work! and my kids are starving!" Then you can bet Bush would have been out on his ass. I simply chose to phrase my response in the manner I did because of your effort to highlight how Americans voted for Bush. Perhaps I misinterpreted your highlighting.

Congratulation to President Bush and all his supporters.

I feel that, out of the two major sides, your arguments were the most reasonable on the forum. This may very well be the reason Bush won. Though I hate the guy, his policies and his demeanor, he apparently won things fair and square. Bush is an average American president, imo, and regardless of who won (barring a third party shocker), I didnt feel things would change much around here anyways.

I agree with someone else's post (perhaps in another thread) and their wish that Bush will concentrate on the duties of being a proper president rather than reaping the rewards of this huge win. Only the next 4 years will tell.

Again, congratulations to the President (-Elect) and to his supporters on this forum.

Could someone tell me, in a nutshell, what happened? Why did Kerry give up? The American system is too different from where I live, and I'm still trying to understand why there's a problem if they were almost tied.

Bush won. Is that simple. He got the popular vote and the electoral vote, although the latter is not yet official. Kerry, I think, realized there's no chance of him winning now. In fact, I think he was expecting to win by a big margin. It didn't happen. I'm not surprised he conceded.

My girlfriend used to live in Brasil for 1 1/2 years and she recently told me that citizens are required to vote in elections, leading to a large amount of scandal and bribery. Fortunately, in the United States, people are allowed to choose whether or not they want to vote and make an educated (or not, if you choose to believe) decision beforehand.

In the United States, each state is given a certain amount of Electoral Votes, based on the population of the state in proportion to the entire United States population. When a candidate wins the majority of the popular vote in each state, they get that state's electoral votes toward their total. Two states, Nebraska and Maine, split their electoral votes by their congressional voting districts. When a candidate reaches 270 electoral votes, they have received a majority and have won the election. George Bush was on the cusp of receiving the majority of the votes, as he would've received 20 from Ohio and was already at 254, so Kerry conceded.
