Hmmmm...I see your point about these laws being about selfishness, but the people pushing these laws and legislation are not advocated under the umbrella of "self-interest" but under "public-interest" or "public-good."

For example, the smoking laws are passed and defended and justified as being for "public-health" and the "rights of non-smokers." What about the rights of smokers? What about the private property rights of the owners of the restaurant or building?

The Helmet laws (and the whole gamete rediculous safety and health laws) being argued as a way to "reduce public costs on health." What right does anyone have that they should get their healthcare paid for by someone else in the first place?

I could go on and on, but you see what I'm saying? As the emphasis shifts from individual rights to collective rights, the rights of individuals shrinks, until all you end up having is a bunch of pressure groups trying to push their self interest upon the government via the "collective rights" of their special group.

I think I speak with some authority since I work within the shackles of a government run health care and heavily unionized profession. I don't speak on behalf of my colleagues (academically or professionally), but it all needs to be privatized. Everything.

It actually is a unique characteristic of Canadians to be utterly selfish while expecting everybody else to be altruistic. Most people either only think of the collective good and are willing to sacrifice their own rights for it (and I won't get into how misguided that is), or only want their individual rights and aren't interested in collectivism.

Canadians manage to bring all the negatives together though. Examples? Private healthcare bans (forcing us to pay for others' health care but not allowing us to pay for our own), but relaxing the laws for politicians and athletes; taxes and tarriffs on everything under the sun, accompanied by murderous rage when the USA decides to cut down on outsourcing or put taxes on wheat; a constitutional amendment to make French an official language but Quebeckers still using their Language Police to weed out English; and levies on CD-R, DVD-R and all other recordable media specifically for the purpose of legalized copying, but the CRIA still trying to sue people for downloading.

And if those are too political, I'm sure we can all think of some examples closer to home. Girls dressing like skanks and complaining about how they get hit on, or guys standing in the corner all night and complaining afterwards how unfriendly the crowd was. Deadbeats who blow an entire paycheque in one weekend and then complain that the government needs to raise the minimum wage. Health nuts who want to outlaw "low carb" labels on food because they did a half-assed job trying the Atkins diet and they're still fat, but think it's perfectly okay for nonsensical labels like "organic" or "all natural" or "diet" to be on food and drinks. Technophobes who refuse to read their car or computer manuals and throw a fit when the stores/dealers/support aren't keen on helping them (yes this happens all over but not nearly as much).

Okay, sure, every country has its flaws, but if you ask me, Canada is the World Capital of Wanting To Have It Both Ways.

Unfortunately I think it pertains more to the GTA area than anywhere else.
You go anywhere out the driving range of Toronto and anyone will tell you that Torontonians think they are the center of the universe and swear that if you could spin Canada like a plate on the stick, Toronto would be the pivot point...
(Disclaimer: I know not all Toronto people are like that, there are LOTS of cool people in Toronto that I've met. It's just a previous outside observation I've made )
