"The single-lens reflex camera, more commonly known by the abbreviation SLR, uses a mirror placed between the lens and the film to project the image seen through the lens to a matte focusing screen."
...
"The SLR cameras also offer the ability for the photographer to quickly and simply change the lens, thus making them versatile." |
*sigh*
don't tell about how its implemented, tell me about what was the goal behind SLR. And its: one lens used both for viewing and taking the picture. So meaning: When you look in the viewfinder, you see exactly what the lense is "seeing" so when you'll take the pic, you'll take exactly what you see in the viewfinder.
Now, back then, the only way to implement that was with a mirror or pentaprism.
fast forward 30 years, electronics can do the same: let me explain myself.
An electronic viewfinder which doesn't need the mirror or the pentaprism can be used to show you exactly what kind of picture you're taking. Hence the appelation SLR for some digital cameras.
SLR has been implemented with the mirror/pentaprism for so long that it has became the norm, even though other imlpementations can do the same thing.
