But in all seriousness, Dune was an excellent book. What he did really well was bring ecology and sociology into the story. Herbert obviously closely studied human societies and the way they are structured in a way that enables them to exist in a harsh environment.

Dune also presents a rather grim portrayal of wars of liberation. The Fremen destroy the Harkonnens only to replace them with something much much worse.

The rest of the Dune series after the first two books, there are six in total, starts to lose the plot. Frank Herberts problem is he never created interesting characters, only interesting ideas, and environments.

Frank Herbert's son did the series justice, and they are interesting books, don't dismiss them easily

as for Aldous Huxley, has anyone ever read Ape & Essence?
i enjoyed it. dont think i'd buy it though.

I love people (Not anyone here, at least, I haven't notice) that try to debate but all they do is say "1984". It's humorous

"It's just like 1984"
"Ever read the book 1984? Oh yeah, just like it!"

"big brother! AHH!"

Then these are the same people that put on aluminum foil helmets to protect themselves from aliens.

I liked the 80's BBC version better than the film. If you seen the film you've seen the original Marvin and the guy that played Arthur Dent who is Simon Jones who ironically played in Twelve Monkeys, a well known film about a dystopian future.

Little things are borrowed from the book. Like Trillian the instant messenger client and Babelfish the online translator.

I also had a button from back in the late 80's that said DON'T PANIC from fedex.

Irony is John Hurt who starred in 1984 is now in V for Vendetta playing a dictator type.
