i think that was the old samurai way of killing themselves, rather than being disgraced for the rest of their lives

So have the finger cut off means you have to be more reliant on your master for protection.

Japanese are not as caught up on death has the western world. You have to remember that up until recently, the main religions of Japan was Shinto and Buddhism. Shinto practitioners believed once they die, they become a divine being. And in Buddhism they believe they will be reincarnated. So a fear of death has a lower priority than one's sense of duty and honor. That's why samurais were so fearless.

What a stupid comment. What you're referring to is an antiquated form of suicide that was used by Samurai to restore their honor when they were defeated in battle or when they were shamed in front of their rulers. Self-harm is not a common practice in modern Japan. On the contrary, Japanese have better-than-average respect for themselves: strict personal hygeine, great work ethic...

This 'girlfriend' of yours is probably afraid of you and doesn't want you gawking at her friends.

I'm not Japanese, by the way, but my spouse speaks it and we both respect the culture and go there often.

well there are a lot of cases of students getting mega stressed over exams and stuff, it probably happens in america too, even if they don't wear uniforms

Not really a stupid comment I was just saying they can do that if they wanted to. My girl even said it herself that there are many japanese woman who do that. I know all about the strict hygiene and great work ethics etc.. and of course I know about the samuari form of suicide just saying japanese are willing to do that. Question is.. would you?

You should watch the documentary on Rising Sun or I think thats what its called about the yearly suicides the community has to take care of. Especially having yearly search parties in a certain forest to hopefully obtain any bodies left. It's practically a traditional thing to them.

plus my girl is native japanese she is not visiting there she stays there.

It might help to get a little first hand experience before making such judgements.

I'm asian too ya know.

Maybe I should say the same for american culture.. but that would piss you guys off if I said something.
