Just donated $20. I also wanna try to find a food/clothing drive for the victims. |
As has been mentioned, transportion costs are a factor, and it makes more sense to send that money to help the victims rather then spend it on mailing fees. You could browse the list of NGO's/governmental agenies that are involved in relief work (Swamper has provided a list in the first post) and see which ones are specifically running drives for food/clothes/child services. This way, instead of giving money in general to some organisation, you could have some say in how your donation would be used. Not that it makes much of a difference really - any sort of help would do for now.
Another huge problem that has come up now is the incredibly vast number of children that have been orphaned. As in most tragedies, it is usually the young and defenceless that are hit the hardest. I don't know what it's like in Indonesia, but, at least in India and Sri Lanka, the social service 'infrastructure' is extremely inadequate and very poorly managed. If you guys can at least spread the word about this problem to your friends/folks/relatives, etc., maybe someone somewhere might just actually be willing. I'm helping out with a group down here that is coordinating this for the orphaned kids in India. If anyone would like any information, please PM me . I can also get you information on similar efforts in Indonesia and Sri Lanka, just in case any of you want to know.
