+1

Im not even sure if final scratch can actually play 24/96 files. It sounds like it could be a little fishy, like some of the "24/96" soundblasters that can only do 16/48 but have DSPs that are "capable" of doing 24/96. Ie, sb extigy, audigy.

Plus, most audio files you'll use are 16/44 anyway, so there's almost no need for the higher bitrate and samplerate.

After reading all of the negative press of FS2 I am considering returning FS for SSL.

Yeah if they are claiming they can play 24/96 files but the output is only 16/44 then SSL can do that too. SSL converts all the files to 32bit internally and then plays them back at 16bit. They can handle 24/96 files fine, you just don't get the extra quality so they don't claim to support it.

It probably would be a good idea. I was a FS 1.1 user, and it totally sucked. I've tried different pcs with different chipsets and a mac to see if i can avoid the crash-amp from crashing. It would disconnect than reconnect randomly during use causing the linux version to lockup and to fail on the mac. That happend on all 3 pcs i've installed it on that had different chipsets/processors. Their tech support was horrid, the forums were shut down due to all of the complaints. I was glad i was able to return the package. Here's a funny post from the final-crash forum:

Final scratch 1.0 $500
1.5 Upgrade $50
1.6 Upgrade $60
2.0 Upgrade $600
Keyspan Firewire $60

Countless hours beta-testing for Stanton and NI,

Priceless.

I really don't think this is true. The Rane website says their codec runs at 16/44. However, I do know that they apply the RIAA curve to the input but it looks like they do this at 16/44 since that is what their DSP runs at.

I am sure the SSL hardware is way better than Stantons (I own version 1.5). I was going to upgrade since it costs current FS users just as much as SSL but it seems like FS2 still sucks and my current version is works "OK".

Guess I will upgrade to a better mixer instead or wait until someone comes out with a version supporting three decks (I heard a rumor that Rane's might do this is the distant future).

PS - Stanton's (NI's) support is truely nonexistant. My version 1.1 originally worked ok then suddenly the keyboard would not work (I reinstalled FS and swaped out keyboard with no success). I e-mailed them and got no response and because FS was basically useless I *ahem* upgraded *ahem* (without paying those bastards another $50) to 1.5. Since then it has worked alright.

I'm just taking their word for it.

But so far I haven't seen any 'marketing' specs on SSL. If they said it works that way I really trust them.
