Mabye it's just me, but when I think PC, the connotation is like that of walking on eggshells. Going to extremes to make sure you don't upset any hypersensitive peeps. Terms like "Veritcally Challenged" to describe short people, and "Surgically enhanced" instead of calling a boob job a boob job come to mind. There are ways to speak in plain English without being a "racist" or an insensitive jackass. |

I understand what your saying. But I'd say that would be being racist rather than unPC (but like I say it's depends on your definition). The way I see it is that PCness is genrally taking things too far. And being impracticle. |
Like almost everything else, there will be extremism: extreme optimists and pathological pessimists, religious and secular fundies, prog-heads and prog-haters... that's an usual social phenomenom.
Likes and dislikes are usually based on the contrary extremism, i.e. it's common to dislike PC because of the die-hard trouble-makers that would reform the whole society to their likes at once if given the chance. Avoiding this stance, there will be those who will become the opposite, fighting for the status quo because they simply can't (or don't want to) understand their side because of the exaggeration.
My example sounded racist because you live in a completely different environment - here it would exist unnoticed till someone pointed it out. That's what PC is for.
Obviously, some take it too far, but a mid-term is sure benefical.

For example a family member of mine is in social work and told me about a "great idea" (he understood what was wrong with it) whereby a cafe was going to be set up where mentally ill people worked in it.
How very nice how very inclusive..... the rent would be unbeliveable firstly. And would you eat at a place where the people suck on their fingers, or worse, then make your food....no-one else would either. And these people have no way of passing any hygine certificates. Thats my understanding of PC. Though perhaps I'm too cynical. |
"Hell is full of good intentions", we say down here. Obviously whoever is behind it wanted to help the situation, but didn't think of the consequences. Or, the "mentally ill" people are just depressed people, for example, and could easily be adapted to such situation.
