lots of corporations have policies for racist/sexist remarks. and most of the consequences involve termination of employment. this isn't any different. it's just that these remarks were made by corporate employees in a public forum.

yea, but this isn't an accountant offending people in the middle of a boardroom meeting; this is putting the clamps on someone who's paid to voice (outrageous and controversial) positions in a public medium.

if arbitron ratings had fallen as a result of the controversy and the morning staff was fired as a result of low ratings it would constitute a business decision and would thus be a different story. but the staff was fired solely for the content of their speech.

when you start firing people for the shit they say it can't help but send a chill down the spine of anyone who works in a similar forum or who produces a good for public consumption.

there's a thin line between being creative and iconoclastic and being vile; just ask damien hirst, howard stern, andres serrano, lenny bruce or jimmy the greek...

Honestly, after what they did and said the ratings for hot 97 were gonna go down, i can't tell the future but the reason i'm saying that is because hot 97 started falling off a while ago and after this it's not gonna give them a better image so i guess the managers of hot 97 were just doing the inevitable

my point was that many things offend many sensibilities. the photographer andres serrano, who i mentioned in the previous posts, has made a career of displaying images that hundreds of thousands of christians have found to be sacrilegious (pics of christ submerged in urine and blood, etc); damian hirst is a sculptor who, among other mediums, likes to work with decomposing animal carcasses, again offending countless people; lenny bruce was a pioneering disc jokey in the 1970s -- the original 'shock jock' -- and millions of people protested him for his offensive antics; howard stern, a character i assume you're familiar with, has been fined millions for vulgarities and yes, racism, in his twenty years on the air.
-- the last point, incidentally, debunks your position that lowered ratings would naturally follow a flood of protests at hot 97...

i guess i'm just the resident civil libertarian here...
