There's stereotypes to almost any state though. I think the main thing about Texas is that the media you're exposed to mostly stems from old "Dallas" reruns and "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure". Instead of actually coming here and chilling with us, they just formulate opinions based on what others have experienced.
I'm not going to lie though. Texas is full of rich, closed-mined, anal-retentive jackasses...but as in any state there a lot of good people that would stop and help you fix a flat tire if you needed it.
When you say "Mexicans", do you mean immigrant workers which came to this country to work for a better life, which some are from other Latin American countries...Americans of Mexican descent (such as myself, but you can call me Chicano or just Dave)...or Latinos which include Panamanians, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Colombians, and other Non-Mexican citizens. I think most people see brown skin and just assume they are Mexican because they're lazy and don't know any better.
There is such a thing as South America and last time I checked...Mexico was in North America.
I blame pop culture for stereotypes. The same culture that taught us to call Packer "Roo-boy" when we met him, or made us look at Ferry Corsten's feet to see if his shoes were wooden is the same that makes you think we all ride horses and have large boots and hats. It makes you think I speak Spanish (I don't) and probably swam the Rio Grande to get here.
Its a culture of ignorance and resistance to knowledge.
You ever wanna see it for yourself and bust those myths about us, come on down and we'll show you a good time. Those stereotypes only represent the dregs of society here. |
Good post carnt.

No, I don't mean it in a deogatory way, as here in the UK we have many Indians/pakistanis/people from poorer asian countries plus eastern europe who make the very same journey. However I heard there is a lot of lets say 'hispanic' crime, take for example 'cops' where if they mean to or not, it comes across as 90% hispanic crime, leading me to wonder if the media do perceieve everything badly there, and also the fact that we're led to believe the border controls aren't good (over here we're given that impression at least) |
If you actually take a look at statistics, you'll find that for every 1 white person in jail, there are 5 minorities there for the same crime...yet for every 5 white criminal out on the streets, there is 1 minority. You have to understand that crime does not know race. Its a class struggle. Poverty is what persuades people to steal and sell drugs to make a better life. People want you to believe that its all about black, white, and brown...but its the whole divide and conquer theory at work. Just ask yourself..."Hmmm which group of people gets the shaft from society....oh yeah, minorities."
Back in the 1900s when the railroad system was being developed in the Southwest, companies paid low wages and provided meager accomodations to white workers. When the white workers decided "Hey, this sucks and we deserve more" and threatened to unionize, the contractors would bring in Chinese and Mexican labor and pay them less. This of course made the white man angry and that led to raping and murdering of the migrant workers. The management sat back knowing that they forgot about the real issue (worker's rights) and enjoyed the show.
I know you don't mean any offense by this thread, but I feel I have to add some kind of knowledge to it. Here's some terms for you:
Hispanic: Typically means "of Spanish decent". When the Southwest was being colonized, many of the rich Mexicans that held land titles would use this term to show they shared European blood with the settlers. They denounced their indiginant roots to protect their livelihoods. This can be seen to this day in New Mexico. If you call someone form there "Mexican", it is a derogatory term. New Mexico was the only state that didn't put up much of a fight when their land was being stolen. It is referred to as "the bloodless conquest".
Mexican: Duh, people from Mexico.
Latino: This is the most widely used and accepted term. This describes everyone that is of Latin American ancestry.
Chicano: Used by exclusively by those of Mexican descent. This term came into being during the Brown Power movement in the 60s in California and Texas. The root of this comes from "Mexica (meh-shee-kah) which was used to describe the indiginent people in mexico. It was originally used as a derogatory term used to describe migrant farm workers but was later used as a battleflag for the Civil Rights Movement. Names of leaders as Corky Gonzales and Rudy Tijerina come to mind when this term is used.
I'm off topic, but the gist of this is that media makes race a point so you can think minorities say out of nowhere "Hey, I'm black...I wanna shoot someone", when its more like "Hey, my family is fucking poor and I need to get money for rent so I can provide for my family...I have trouble getting hired at a good wage because all the good jobs are too far away from me and I'm too poor to buy a car. If I sell drugs, I can make money and feel like a man again."
bottom line: read books and do some research if you really care about our culture and don;t rely on someone else's words to dictate your view on society.

sorry, but this kind of ignorant posting makes me realize that yes, humanity is doomed to ignorance, and you guys are perfect examples of this |
You've missed the point however that we've happily taken onboard the views & advice given to us, how else will we know what places are really like when all we have is biases media sources etc, eg the only texan I know is Stone Cold Steve Austin, who Am I to say that every1 isn't a clone of him. I've been interested reading it anyway, so don't think we're ignorant, everyone is ignorant if they don't know facts, but at least we've been told some
