There was a documentary on SBS last Friday night exploring this very topic, called "Get it on":

This documentary explores the culture of sex in music and music videos, from James Brown, Elvis and The Beatles to contemporary recording artists like Beyoncé Knowles. (From Canada, in English)

I recorded it onto my computer (using Fusion HDTV card) and watched it.
I was surprised to see some commentary of the rave culture, (and I think we can extend it to the modern electronic dance music culture in general), saying that in sexual terms, it is more masturbatory in comparision to other music cultures (pop & R&B). I think much the "masturbatory" nature has to do with the consumption of MDMA. people self-pleasure themselves with pills, and with the aid of psychedelic flourescent lights and hypnotic throbbing music. Of course there is still some social element, but in comparison to other music cultures it is usually more of friendliness and empathy than of overt sexuality, and the efects of MDMA are probably the main reason.
