it's great as a hobby and a side gig, but always have a good job/backup plan as your main source of income
unless you have a couple residencies that combine to make up a good income, but then if you're playing out that much, most of that money is being re-invested back into records |
I'm going to stop everyone right here and ask the following: When did I say I was planning on making a career/"significant" monies being a DJ?
The last time I was in Europe (Lived in Amsterdam for 6 months) plenty of really bad DJ's were making a little extra cash on the side DJ'ing in cafe's/bars...
I'm going to school for a career, but I don't believe I'm eligible to work (officially) while in Holland on a student visa, so I figured if I could find some small venues in/around Utecht I "may" be able to make a little extra spending money.
I guess all I'm trying to do is stop any "If you're only in this for the fame/money then you're worthless and not going anywhere." talk before it starts. All I was thinking is that the opportunity to make a little side cash DJ'ing while in the Netherlands was a bit more likely than in Stevens Point, WI, USA. And since I can't go out and apply for a "real" job, it would seem that attempting to find some cash DJ gigs may help me foot the bill for school/living expenses.
So, in summation, I am not a deluded DJ convinced that I will be the next Sasha/Digweed/Armin/Ferry etc. I spin records because I like to, period. If someone decideds to give me a few dollars/euro/pounds/etc. for it; great.
But I'll also tell you this much; I have no intention of ever believing the "You'll never be the next (insert random highly paid, globetrotting DJ name here)." argument. At night, I dream of rocking a crowd like some of the headliners, and just because even after a lot of work it's still likely to never happen, doesn't mean the dream goes away.
Ack, sorry for the rant, and the delayed reaction. Can't post on TA from my apartment due to schwag internet connection.
Cheers,
RJT

Has anyone been spun out at a club/party recently that was using these new mixers?
I know it's been said before, but yeah, a lot of TA's do have WAY better setups than some of the clubs I've been to...
In any event, thanks to everyone, I think the conclusion I've come to is that I'll be looking seriously into purchasing an Allen & Heath mixer sometime over the summer, but for now I am more than happy with buying another DJM. The price was definitely right (400$ for a DJM, boy what ar eyou smoking?) and like I said before, I am just comfortable with 'em, and that goes a LONG way for me considering most events I spin here at school require almost all my own equipment.
Thanks again everyone, and sorry for the 'lil outburst above, I was just not in the mood for a "Hold your horses there Mr. Wannabe Sasha Jr." post at the time.
Peace, Cheers,
RJT
