Like i said before, you cant pick and choose to use this mentality to suit yourself. Once you start the ban brigade its hard to stop. I really hope we get over this phase in society quickly.

um...no. That's *your* premise that *you* are trying to attribute to the Liberals.

you seem to want a "blanket mentality" that applies to ALL cases...well, that's great on paper...in reality, we have what are called mitigating circumstances and common sense.

There's nothing wrong "picking and choosing" issues based upon their effect, level of harm, etc.

If people putting up posters is merely aesthetically unpleasing to some...then yeah, I think it can be treated less harshly vs. smoking and pit bulls, both of which have resulted in serious injury, illness or death.

this is why so many people don't take you seriously...when you just joke about a topic that you bring up, instead of logically arguing your position, you just make yourself look like less intelligent.

Jay, you seem high on increasing personal responsibility, just as I am...so can you explain to me what's wrong with legislating that people who put up posters have to remove them after their event?

It's called TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR, AND CLEANING UP AFTER, YOURSELF!

The next spread of events covers up the old ones.

If anything they add a nice splash of colour where plywood construction walls, or pollution soiled concrete would otherwise stand.

The original problem stated in the first post mainly had to do with hydro poles. The problem is that when the next spread of events covers up the old ones, they all eventually deteriorate and make things to look like an ugly mess.

Again, why don't people who rely on this form of promotion just clean up after themselves?? That doesn't sound like it's too much to ask.

And again, the time of "deteriorated" surfaces, and amount of them, are minimal since they get covered with the next batch of events quickly. Also, I've often witnessed postering ppl tearing the surface clean so they can get their stuff on. You don't see a 4ft thick ring of paper on any poles do you?

Also, some coloured paper, in any condition, is preferable to the blackened grey or brown of the surfaces from pollution. Those poles are hardly nice to look @ uncovered. Might as well put something up there to make the drab concrete city-scape somewhat livelier and tolerable.

It's also an essentially un-regulateable industry, with top courts already crushing fines from these bylaws. It's a waste of city resources to be meeting over such a minor issue.

For example during PRIDE in the summer, the weekend events were postered towards the end of the night's festivities. Right after the posters went up, the City crews came through with pressure washers and stripped the poles clean. They did this every night Church street was closed off. Now, why not simply do it during the end of weekend clean up, saving not only the water costs, but the labour? So much $$$$ spent, and poorly managed, over such an insignifigant issue.

Go David Miller!

Glass houses Mark.

You and RobbyG are just as guilty of the same tactics in other threads, so don't go opening that can of worms.

Guilty as charged... but when "someone" cops out of an argument with "well then they should ban this or that" & then says that they are being "sarcastic" ... how in hell are we supposed to take this person serious during a debate...

Where's Aaron (aka Diginut) when we need 'em

do you have any idea how much money Pride brings into the city? How much is that indie band or single club bring in? Sure, people come in from out of town for a party...but they generally leave the same day. Pride results in tens of thousands coming from out of town (out of country, even)...that's airfare, hotel, meals, etc.

Pride "earns" far more for the city than it's cleanup costs...poorly orgarnized postering...sure...but at least it WAS cleaned up!

And Pride committees have a shitload of volunteers who also do cleanup on the streets. Who's taking down posters around the city? *very* few people...

I'm as sarcastic as they come, lol...but I don't recall getting nearly as ridiculous as jay with my sarcasm..."ban farting" yeah, it's funny...but before I'm sarcastic, at least I address what other people have to say instead of hiding behind silly jokes

I don't see a response from him on what is wrong with expecting the people who poster/flyer to clean up after their events...like I said, banning posters is dumb...expecting people to clean up after themselves is not.
