One thing I did when I first got my gear was; I fired up Traktor, started a song and made a 4 beat loop. Then I tried to beatmatch the record to the loop. Once I got it fairly well matched, I would reset the pitch on the table and change the pitch on the Traktor loop and do it again.

if your just working on beat matching, it might be a good idea to use tracks that have the basic percusive elements at the beginning and end of the tracks, to use for reference. Also, to speed things up, don't wait for the song to play though the middle, just skip to the end where you want to mix in, that way you can mix more times per hour.

Practice practice practice

For the needle. Put some weight on it! It wont kill ur records that fast...it'll kill your records like 2 minutes earlier than it would with the weight on lightly. Just take the needle and put it on the vinyl...or put the arm up high on that adjuster thing...then move it over then drop it with the up and down thingy (sorry, it's morning and I just woke up...not thinking yet)

Start at the lightest on the weight...just move the vinyl back and fourth a few times...if the needle skips or moves, put the weight a little higher...keep doing that till you get it right.

Dont finger fuck the record if it starts trainwrecking... Learn to control the speed by using the pitch shifter. Helpful if you ever get stuck at a house party with shitty ass NuMark turntables, trust me

what everyone else said, all good adive

also

practice cueing in on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th beats, until u can cue like a crazy person, it doesnt seem like the most amusing or readily useful technique, but it will help u and will allow you to become very comfortable with vinyl. for a least a half hour a day i practicing catching and re-cueing beats systematically, even mor ehelpful now that im gettinginto turntalism

well, normally you are cueing in on the 1st of four beats, you count in your head, 1, 2, 3, 4, then you drop the beat on 1 again. Try having the second beat ready, and counting, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, then dropping the second beat in on 2, ive been on tables where it wont cue up on the first beat keeps popping out, no matter what weight or setting it is on, so you have to be able to accomodate. if you have any battle/break records, practice catching the beats, you you know at what exact point a beat goes under the needle etc etc

become one with your vinyl and tables.
