Who ever says cut off ties, I have to disagree. Some of my most meaningful friendships are with ex girlfriends. Mind you not all ex's are capable of maintaining a friendship, but you'll never know which ones are if you give up too soon.
It seems like in your case, he turned out to be somebody different than who you thought he was. I believe every relationship starts out that way, you start off by seeing the good, and then you progressively see the big picture. The big picture might not be the picture you've always envisioned on your mantle. Some people stay in bad relationships because they hold onto the good that was there early on choosing to ignore the bad that creeps up.
Personally, I can't assess/attach into anything until at least 2 months. And even then it's sketchy. Being able to control feelings from attaching onto something that's too good to be true is key for preventing eventual heartbreak. The sad thing is, it usually takes a few solid heartbreaks to come to this realization.
