Hehe...Yeah, it was a great time to be young and living in New Yoick. In many ways I was fortunate to be a part of the last few years when the scene was actually thriving before political pressure killed the spirit of NYC clubbing. That being said, i remember thinking the same thing you did about people who got to experience the STORM RAVES of the early 90's...

My experience involved legandary NYC clubs like Limelight, Tunnel, Vinyl, Soundfactory and of course the gem of all NYC clubs --- TWILO (Rip ) --- but i remeber wishing i coulda been around to go to just one STORM RAVE, and truly Xperience what a real underground party was like...

I remeber having a scan of this photo taken by a friend who was fortunate to attend quite a few storm raves (lucky son of a bitch)...it's a shot of a young raver standing outside this warehouse which got busted by the popo...there's this helicopter up above, shining a massive spotlight on this kid, as cops swarm the place and clubbers are scattered in all direction, hoppin it...but this kid is just standing there, obviously fucked out of mind, staring directly into this beam of light, arms outstretched, screaming something...

When i asked my friend if he heard what the kid was saying, he ruefully smiled and told me he was expressing the collective sentiment of every raver that had ever been told that what they were doing is illegal...and so, he stood there, while others ran and asked only one thing...

"Why ? Why are you guys doing this...why won't you just let him (the DJ) finish his set ? "

Man...i gotta find that pic, cause that to me was the essence of the underground and the rave culture. That spirit of rebellion, hedonism and chemical love all comming togather the moment that DJ connected the needle with the record and there was sound...

and everything else became inconsquential...

anyway...nuff reminiscing, time to look towards the future. LAWLER @ System --- w00t !

Aye, thats one thing that I'd wanna experience. The scene before it became so big. Before every DJ was treated like a superstar. Obviously, Sasha & Digweed were gods, even back then. But the sound of the scene was still really moving forward and it was much more fresh compared to what it is now (not saying it's stale now, though). Now it's becoming so corporate and commercial. Just look at the WMC. Don't get me wrong though. There's definately some sick parties there, i.e Lawler's Lights Out WMC party...but would you prefer to experience that, or go back in time and experience Lawlers sound as it was maturing in the mid-late 90's when he was still a nobody...when his sound didn't have a "label"?

But I guess in 10 years time people at my present age will be going "man, I wish I saw Zabiela live back then, when he was the ONLY one doing what he does. That must've been so mind-blowing"...to which I'll go " yeeeep"
