yes i know its from 1997, but i didnt get into trance then so the first version i actually listened to was the 1999 remake, and the signum remix was my fave, but i seem to like the 97 better now

For me, trance is still trance under much heavy influence of other kinds of genre depending on what are you asking for.

I haven't heard any non hard trance from 2005 so I can't comment, but 1999 was really special in terms of the amount of great tunes arising from what was a new formula for the genre at the time.

I was unlucky enough to come across "Sunscream - Exodus (Fire & Ice Remix)" and I have never looked back.

It converted me and became the inspiration for every single song I produce in one fell swoop.

Now all my songs start out as deep house and end up trance because of this song!!!

So no contest. I'm all for back then and I will never convert. Production be damned!!

I dunno, maybe I am not listening to what most people call trance anymore, but the old style seems much more formulaic than the stuff coming out now. I remember being able to predict what was gonna happen in tunes I'd just nabbed off the p2p programs.

I go through my old CD's now, and I realize that from the stuff that I have from that period alot of it follows that same damn formula. From the copilation CD's, I find that I can only stand a couple of the songs on them now, but I used to never have to skip so many tracks to find something I could stand.

Not that the formula doesn't still exist, but it seems like more artists are all deviating from it in their own ways, where in 1999 it was much more common to have every son follow the same formula, with bigger and more exagerated supersaws released every week in attempt to outshine the previous.

As far as the general partying environment, well I wasn't quite old enough to know, but back in 1999 trance was dare I say, trendy?

I think that in 2005 the trance we are getting is more about fun and less about being 'cool'. The people who come out to see it seem to be here more because they really enjoy it and less because it is the big fad at the moment.

I'm still having just as much fun, I think we look back to 1999 with nostalgia because of history just as much as the music. People seem to pay less attention to the dominant ideas of the different time periods, kids were just acting different in 1999 because different things were cool and fun back then, now that the world of EDM has so many more different people in it those things aren't so cool anymore.

Maybe 1999 was so special because for so many people it was their first time going out and partying, there was that huge surge in popularity back then, and we all know that the parties are much more fun when you first start going to them. But after the fad wore off things changed, for the worse? I don't think so, I think we have more people in it for the music now and less for the coolness factor, which is why I enjoy 2005 more.

A great year for trance was 1997 in terms of quality of productions. in 1999 trance really got popular, climaxed and started downhill.

In present times most producers (not all) have evolved their productions to a more complex, more structured multi-layered sound; but complexity doesn't necesarily means quality and beauty. Most pre-1999 productions had excellent quality and beauty without that complexity.

That original hypnotic melodies that characterized trance had been replaced with just catchy melodies that seems to be driven by the producers need to release, rather than by art of inspiration.

You know the old cliché of your mom or dad saying "back in the day, music was soo much better than that rubbish they have now"...

It's when you start doing that yourself you realise... you're getting old!

For me the most exciting time of the 90's was around the middle of the decade, a lot of core classic all time albums came out around the 94-96 years that totally shaped the music being made after ( BT - Ima , Northern Exposure 1 to name just a couple)

I get the feeling that we're about to approach a similar peak for this decade too with EDM.

I look back at the mid-90's with fond memories, but I dont look back thinking they were 'better' , music's moving forward, both good music and bad, always has always will
