well TT are made to play records, there are effects units that can add that in. seems like you haven't been into djin that long though to really know the difference.

I will admit i've only been ejing's for 2 years now, so still in training. I could'nt afford TT's, so tried my hand at MP3 mixing. Its not as easy as just pressing the Beatmatch button though, try doing that and you might get a good mix 1 in 100 times. The new fad is harmonic mixing, using perfect fourth and fifth minor progressions. It took me nearly a year to be able to spontaneously mix, setting up the next mix in 3/4 mins when playing live. Don't get me wrong, i'd have nothing against TT's, and once I've got enough money I'll be buying a set...

Any suggestions on the best set of TT's to buy, and is it possible to link them to the laptop and combine TT's and mp3 mixing into one system???

best TT's -> Technics.

yes, there is a system, called FinalScratch. there is a rival to it, which is Serato ScratchLive. same thing, different name. haven't used SSL myself so can't compare, and only played around with FS once.

anyways, i don't get why iloop didn't just buy something like FS. that way, he could rip all his records to his laptop, and walk around everywhere with it, and only need his 2 encoded vinyls. makes more sense, IMO. plus, mixing completely on a computer, with not even a hardware interface is way too impersonal for me.

sure, embrace technology, the new stuff, whatever, but you can't tell me someone who has always spun on something like Traktor has the same skill as an 'oldschool' 3 deck techno DJ that mixes a record a minute.

if you're going to embrace technology, you should use it to add to what already exists, not take away. not knocking on anyone, but having someone sit behind a PC really 'takes away' from the experience for me.

Don't get me wrong, I still plan on using TT's, CDJ's and such, and I didn't have 500US to spend on final scratch and keep my TT's. it was a choice i made due to the travelling and not being able to take loads of equiptment(backpack w/laptop) yet still have a way of mixing live... I do enjoy all the commentary however. I am glad to see everyone's mixed reactions

um dude harmonic mixing is hardly a fad its been around for more than a decade - its just common sense in terms of track selection. wtf is a minor fourth or fifth? they (intervals not progressions) are the same - five and seven semitones respectively - regardless of whether you're dealing with a major or a minor key.

I woudn't say it's a fad, I have been doing it for years.
I just think it's more at the forefront of music as the demands on the DJ have increased a lot people have tried to find ways to understand what makes great DJs what they are. Harmonic Mixing is just one of many things.

You don't need to know much music theory to do it though.

Um dude a progression is when you change key when mixing one tune into the other... eg. Am --> Dm (I-IV progression) or Am --> Em (I-V progression). Take a chill pill and dont be getting on my case just because just because you're having a bad day...
