agree about the kick - it doesn't have to be a bassy kick, as you'll find with a lot of drum n bass the kick often has a lot of top end on it and just lets the bassline handle the bottom end, which would probably help with your problem of your synths fighting with your kick
the synths are excellent as are the ideas, but the whole track sounds a bit unclear - sounds to me as though it may be compressed too heavily?
would be interested to hear your work in other genres |
It seems the problem also lies in the drum loops I've used (which have this bassy kick), so I'm now adding an extra drum layer with a drier kick drum. The compression also turned out to be another problem, and that's something else I'm working on (I still have to study a lot about mastering and compressing in general). Thank you for the tips
As for working in other genres, I'm looking forward to showing some material in a couple of months. I'm just trying to figure out in what different ways I can use multiple tempos with ordinary software

Hey Maaz...
On the technical side, you need to give your mix some more headroom and let up on the compressor a bit. Just give all of the elements a little more room to breathe and the mixdown should sound better. I find when I work with non-percussive based music, I oftentimes turn down the individual outputs, as I don't want any one element to really stand out. The final result is much easier to work with in mixdown than something where everything is fighting for whatever room it can get. |
hmm... good points here, thank you

On the musical side, it sounds similar to what I make, in terms of overall structure. I'm going to guess you get bored easily and keep adding elements to the track. The lead synths have a mortal kombatish feel, but I'm not quite sure why. Bassline is rocking, could benefit greatly from some sidechain compression (doh, getting technical again). Really some propa hard and fast DnB. |
I was adding elements because I always thought the tune was a bit "empty" so when I realised it had got where I wanted (i.e. the tune was full without having dissonant melodies) I then stopped and tried to work on the mastering. Then, in the middle of it I had the major software breakdown I mentioned in the 1st post. Before proceeding though, I wanted to know what people would think of it

Ahh I know why it reminds me of MK - other forms of trance 'n bass have leads that play longer notes, and therefore seem much slower, whereas the notes here furiously keep up with the overall tempo. |
That's exactly the feeling I wanted to give.
I want people to listen to this tune and get in touch with their innner destructive selves, rush immediately toward the highest skycraper around with energy sparking out of their body yelling war chants, run up its walls till they get to the rooftop, find their archnemesis waiting for them in that very same building so both of them could jump 50 meters high and then kick one another blazing fireballs with all their power while a heat-seeking camera follows the best angles of this gravity independent ode to destruction.
Either that or having people hop around their rooms fisting the air. Then I would know my mission on Earth is complete.

I'm working on this tune as well, it's just a matter of time really
