Agree about the show aspect...I mean, I love hot chicks regardless, but for me it was all about the power under the hood. I didn't care much about the looks of the car (no paint, no skirts, no rims). It was all about engine and handling. Wider rims with wider tires would've come eventually, though.
On the FI vs. NA issue, you don't have the wear-and-tear on your engine by going NA AT FIRST, rather than jumping straight to FI. My goal was always to get to Turbo eventually, after the cam gears, ECM, etc. But I wanted to make the car at its peak possible potential before I threw the SMACK down.
I think the two complement each other rather than one vs. the other. And for that reason, you have to change the smaller parts FIRST, logically.
