It sticks in my throat a bit that they have recieved many millions of dollars worth of aid from both government and non-government organisations, yet continue to treat one of our citizens as they are. I'm not at all saying that Australias aid contribution should be stopped, but it makes you think.......

And yeah, she's totally innocent imho.

Is there any suggestion she's been mistreated there? She's on trial for a crime they consider very serious. how else would you have her treated?
Should we refuse to aid millions of people because one person is being put on trial?

its a tough one..

but seriously.. we have no right to intervene.. just the same way as we would say the indo govt. has no right to intervene if it was the other way around.. the person has come here, therefor must be treated under that countries legal system, no matter how unfair it may seem.

australia and our govt. should be providing her with legal assistance, yes. but we cant expect them to just pull her out, saying "oh its okay, shes australian".

and Simon00.. seriously.. not everything in this world is Johnnies fault...

I got a bad feeling shes gonna get shot up for this one. No way would you take 4kgs of weed into a country that
a) has the death penalty for that
b) where it is worth 25% or whatever of what it is here

The evidence was definitely tampered with, or at least not treated properly (ie 20 or so indos put their filthy fingers on it so no printing could be done), they wont examine it to find where it is actually from, and the customs officers are in my opinion, blatently lying. But Ruddock is doing as little as possible to help out, badmouthing her lawyers etc. I smell a deal between govts here...

And those who feel any sort of fondness for Johnny, do some research into what he has done to the country in the last decade, and the way he's gone about it. The man is vile.

yeah, i understand that. but the world's political systems are working (albeit slowly) towards international law. you cant simply say that any internal political systems that exist on this planet are none of anyone else's business (and indeed the UN is there to poke its nose in, as useless as they may be).

im not saying that Oz or US or whomever's laws should govern the world, but some things are fundamentally wrong and we should fight against them in all their guises. the whole reason the death penalty shouldn't exist is becoz of the human race's margin for error.

getting shot in the head for possessing some pot isnt right. and to that end, our govt should be doing all it can. politics (esp internationally) is constantly a quid pro quo system of organisation, and our govt should be mentioning all we've done for indonesia and should she be found guilty allow her to serve time in Oz for her "crime".

the alternative to this argument is that we can *never* intervene in a sovereign nation's internal mis-management, and i think thats bollocks.

oh, and soups, hows my vinyl coming along eh??

Indonesia was ranked 'most corrupt country in Asia (PERC survey), Jakarta rated the most corrupt city and the customs service graded the most corrupt institution in the country (Transparancy International survey)

Guilty or not it is sad and unfortunate that this girl is on trial in Indonesia, whatever the verdict Australia has little right to intervene on a matter this size. To put it in perspective: She is accused of smuggling some pot; many East Timorese died long before our government took any notice. Our media should be spending more time filming what is happening right now in West Papua in the lead up to their independence rather than camping outside of her cell.

It would be interesting to see the Javanese public opinion and the spin the Indonesian media is putting on this case though

i disagree. when we're talking about an Oz citizen i don't think the size of the matter really matters- its not like im advocating we send in the SAS and break her out there's nothing wrong with our govt talking to the indonesian govt and just stating their concerns, and reaching an agreement whereby the poor bitch doesn't have her head blown off.

they don't have to criticise the indonesians, the govt or their laws. -they just stick up for an australian citizen that could possibly be executed for a crime that our govt does not believe warrants death. like renegade said.

our govt is elected by our citizens and like it or not, our govt's first priority is to us. for all the money and effort this country spends trying to bolster opportunities for those in our region that are less fortunate, we've earnt a few favours imo.
