Actually it works based on a physical law that says when two sources of (slightly) different frequencies mix, impulse is created which freq is difference of first two. (due to constructive and destructive interferences). In order to perceive freq of say 2Hz, since your ear cannot possibly hear this is to have two coherent (sound) sources, a pure tone works best. So you need headphones, put a sine wave of say 440Hz on left ear and 442Hz on right ear. This must not mix anywhere before your brain (doent work on speakers) in order for 2Hz to be perceived (inside brain). This not only becomes a resonant freq in both of your brain hemispheres, (hemisync effect), but also puts brain in delta stage. The best meditaion is somewhere around 7Hz (theta/alpha). Of coz you need to be concentrated only on sound with as less as possible outer stimuli (closed eyes, lying down, ...). So dont think it could be used on parties. What can be used to trance you up is repetative rhytmic patterns (and not much else), but thats other type of music.

Edit:
Brain machines on parties were used to relax you or bring you up to euphoric states. They used sound + light combination. ie: try looking at monitor flashing at 7Hz (2 colors) for some time.

couldn't it work with phase?

I mean when you have a stereo wave and you put each channel to different phase they subtract each other...

when we put say 440hz in left and 447hz in right and then phase these...would it leave 7 hertz?

I am not really sure I am just trying to come up with a way so be nice on me

Thats an interesting idea with phase modulation. You could put on both left and right channels sine waves od same freq and then have LFO modulate the phase of either one of them (only one). Phase would go from 0-180deg and LFO using freq of desired brainwaves freq (say 7Hz). At a point where phase is 0, constructive interference doubles amplitude of wave and where phase difference is 180 waves simply cancel each other out. Mixing those in mono looks same like mixing those of different frequencies without any modulations, so perhaps it just might work! Anyway the key of all this is complete stereo separation of channels, they should only mix inside your brain.

is this possible only on headphones? or is it achievable with speakers too?

You can't really achieve this on speakers because left and right channels mix before they reach your ears.

let's concentrate on how to make it rather than on the fact that it doesn't work

from my understanding, the process is called "entrainment"... its the idea that when two osciallating entities are in the same environment they will eventually begin to oscialliate in sync with each other... by having sounds pan in a certain way, your brainwaves will go in sync with the panning sounds, matching the cycles of the panning sounds... this can reduce the brainwave cycles, producing the alpha, theta, or delta brainwaves (to whatever preference you desire)

an artist called mystical sun (http://www.mysticalsun.com) has a song called "journey to samadhi" which uses this technique... there is a program called "natura sound therapy" which does the same... a company called centerpointe makes "holosync" CDs which also entrain brainwaves (http://trans4mind.com/holosync/)... I'd really like to learn how to experiment with these techniques... I think it would give a really strong edge to the ambient I've been producing...

edit: I think stormy T is probably more accurate than I am... so take what I say with a grain of salt...

You are right about the idea of entrainment, but not about the way brain is entrained by sound.

Tesla's findings on entrainment were transfered onto the human brain, and this brain entrainment phenomenon was called - frequency following response (FFT). More info on:
http://www.erowid.org/culture/refer...project_1.shtml

What I described earlier is the way of brain entrainment using sound waves - this technique is called "binaural beats".

Edit:
You can find some more info on binaural beats here:

Use the Digital Drug CD for:

* Boosting your mood, increased happiness
* Alert yet relaxed state of mind
* Inebriated feeling, without the alcohol or headache!
* Rocketing your visualization skills
* Increased confidence, getting rid of inhibitors

Digital Drug CD - Instructions

Using the Digital Drug CD couldn't be simpler!

Like all our binaural beat recordings, simply slip on your stereo headphones and press the "Play" button on your CD player. The binaural beats will automatically begin affecting your brainwaves, and you'll soon realize the benefit - an ultra-happy mood and an increased confidence!

Digital Drug CD - Your Experience

You love the rush of a theme park roller coaster, or the true inner happiness experienced during a rare moment of love. Why can't these moments happen more often, you think? Why can't the world live like that all the time?

With a "digital drug", you can touch those parts of your mind usually reserved for the peaks of our existence. This is a totally legal, completely safe, non-addictive binaural beat recording that releases endorphins, the body's natural "happy pill", to bring about an elevated mood state.

You simply slip on the headphones and relax. You feel soft and cosy. As the noises swish around inside your head, you gain a total sense of clarity and harmony. Your brain naturally generates and releases endorphins, enkephalins, endogenous opiates, and serotonin... your mood elevates, pain disappears, fears and anxieties are crushed. You steadily begin to realize your sensitivity has increased. Suddenly everything looks brighter and more beautiful. Why don't people usually see this? You feel like a famous movie director, with a very special lens on life.

You're totally conscious with amazing clarity of mind. You feel a sense of euphoria. You close your eyes and can suddenly visualize anything you dream of. It's truly amazing. And it doesn't just last for your sixty minute session... this is a totally natural "high on life" digital drug, with the effects lasting for hours afterward... no sudden "drop down", no adverse effects. It's life happiness.

this is actually strange...you've got headphones which can play sounds at 0.5 Hz? if you do send them over to me
