Belated as usual but I just finished listening to this thoroughly. I'm not too big on where Sasha's been cruising for the last 8 months or so, but hey, the rock kids love it. Me? I just don't see the banging of pots and pans with wooden spoons (tachyon?) for percussion as all that innovative really. I bopped my head 30 minutes in, till i began feeling ewan pearson making his presence felt.

On the bright side though, the appeal of ableton is really growing on me. After hearing what he's done with beanfield - tides [carl craig's remix], I'm really impressed. I've had this tune in my box for a while (which every man and his pet racoon may now have ) - and he's just added so much more to it - keep in mind, being remixed live. the majority of this original track consists of a beat, a bass synth, a minimally processed vocal, and snare + hat for good measure.

mixed live with ableton - he's introduced a different bass drum, emphasized percussion added all the way through, new bassline (quite deep in the lower frequencies), ambient trinkling pad/synth in the background and orgied with the vocal!

Fantastic.

Thoughts on the mix?

Anybody want to guess what that weird ass sound in Tiefschwarz's" dub is? 49 mins in?
i got dibs on the involvement of a wooden spoon

have to agree with that

just had a listen now and this has to be one of the worst CDs I have ever heard. Just way too many bleeps and bops for my liking with no real progression throughout the CD. Only track I really dig is Beanfield - Tides.

I think the CD's full of progression. I still find it fucking boring as shit, as I'm not interested in the genre anymore. The ableton mix to me, is more boring then a live mix or many other recent deck DJ mixes.

I find his ableton mixes rather dull and hardly pushing boundries for the ability the software has. When used as a tool (IE Richie Hawtin style'd CD) it's an amazing tool, when it's used to add a few twinkles and the odd bassline and echo, it's just a wank.

Quite a lot of old tracks on the CD.

Sasha's not on top of the game in my mind. I'm sure the CD will sell well, and I'm sure there will be a lot of people saying this is the most amazing CD ever. It takes more then this to impress me. The techno boys have been using 3 dex, Ableton and 909's. I guess my ears have been spoilt.

Oh to those who have Balance 007, if you haven't heard disc 3, you're missing out on the best disc IMO. But if you don't like the first 2 you probably won't like the 3rd one. Fortier's not a progressive DJ any more, if that's what you like or expect, you're going to get nothing from the series.

I haven't heard it yet myself, but judging by some of the recent sasha stuff, I agree with the above post.

Albeton has some potential to do some really cool things with DJing performances, but in the hands of a DJ like sasha, it can lead to a really boring set. Stop trying to impress the crowd by hiding everything you're doing behind the decks by making the music seem endless and seamless, and instead just make it sound cool. Just like the fact not all mixes have to be 3 min fades between tracks, cuts have their place too.

Sasha's recent e-mix puts me to sleep.

djway: Balance 007 disc 2 is amazing and it sounds pretty deep & proggy to me? the way prog should be essentially. I guess you could call it deep tech house.

Haven't heard Fundacion yet but heard the recent e-mix and can't say I was impressed either. He's always been one at the forefront but Ableton isn't the future IMO. Track selection was dull too.

As for Fortier - Balance 007 CD2 > CD1. Smooth prog with just the right balance of melody and percussion. CD1 too techish, only a couple of good tracks. Still haven't heard CD3 yet. Fortier was batshit boring live in Sydney.

Wade - where do you think Balance will go with Desyn doing the next one then?

Is Desyn definitely doing the next one? God I hope he remains on the funky tip and doesn't bash out the electro rubbish he's been playing lately.
