bedroom dj vs professional dj
-professional dj-
it's important to realize that this argument has absolutely no relevance to professional djs who make a living from gigging around the world.
it's stupid to assume that they are going to wait until there are promos (which are a whole other story) because it is in their personal interest to play (good) songs as soon as they can.
ex. james holden - played here the other night exclusively from cd. do you think this is because he is anti-vinyl? i would assume not since he has his own label.
-bedroom dj-
lots of validity in the argument that using only cds hurts 'the industry'. some issues (like slamming beatport, edmdigital etc) seem kind of odd. sure there is lots of crap, but thats part of being a dj, finding the non-crap tunes amongst the crap.
ex. otis music - fantastic used record shop (sean can attest to this) but about 98% of the tunes in that shop are complete garbage. they definitely did not deserve to get pressed.
"one mans junk is anothers gold" (something like that). if everyone posting in this thread posted tracklistings to sets, I'm sure i could find a load of tunes i think are complete shit, a waste of plastic, be it a cd or a record. but clearly the dj thinks they are badass, its called style, everyone has their own.
im sure im gonna get some replies like "you miss the point" etc. sure, i probably miss the more business oriented point of view, but thats ok with me, to be honest, im an advocate of the creative commons approach to music.
if i ever make any dope tracks they will be availble for high quality downloads, free.
peace, caleb
