Yeah, good job. Take a man much older, and talk about what he did in an extremely difficult time at a very young age, and you're going to tell him he shouldnt be pope?

Meanwhile you have people with extremely fucked up pasts such as george bush and arnold and god knows who else with extremely powerful positions in your country.

People don't go to Church because they want to, they go because they feel obligated or for tradition. Over the past many centuries the Catholic Church has performed many abominations, casting a poor light on Christianity as a whole. I believe there are many Catholics that are good Christians, but the overall message is corrupted by the Church. Indulgences, the Crusades, etc, etc...

Well actually EVERY religion is a business, every church/synagogue/temple is a business sponsored by the goverment or some organization, the Catholic Church maybe more so than most because of it's scale and traditional look that requires a lot of finances.

Is this what you mean when you say its all about the money and power?

The Catholic Church, during the counter-reformation period that followed the split of England, changed it's image to what you see now - the impressive statues, the beautiful woodwork, the shiny regalia made of precious metals, and the tinted glass in the marble walls.

The reasons? To separate itself from the Protestant church, which adopted the plain white washed look for it's churches.

Protestant culture - Man doesn't need gold and fancy statues to pray to God, those things are nothing more than distractions and are wasteful
Catholic culture - The objects of beauty and awe in the Catholic Church serve to remind the patrons of God, who created such beauty, and inspire them to be better people though their senses.

They are both good ideas in my opinion, I'm very visual though, so I like the Catholic version better.

And as for the crusades, indulgences, and the inquisition, that was 500 years ago or more, give it a rest

Doesnt the catholic bible have like 6 more books in it then the KJV? maybe all that stuff is backed by those extra books.

I dont understand much about being a catholic, but I think it would be really cool to go to Europe and stand in a huge crowd like that waving flags around and stuff, ppl dont act like that over here, except on september 12th. That and singing in bars, do ppl really sing at bars over there?

I heard that catholics are not encouraged to read the bible like protestants are, that they are instead encouraged to rely on the word of the ministers, not sure how true that is though, not that I care all that much either way.

I find that the crowd of people that I met at church when I used to go seemed to go to church to form a sort of wholesome family community, almost like it was meant to raise their kids to be a certain way and to form a little community separate from the nasty reality outside. Kinda like a peer pressure thing to be "good". There is also alot of people who went for professional networking reasons, cuz people can get pretty well-connected in a church. It definately seemed to be more about forming a community of like-minded people than it did being drawn to God, it almost seemed as if all the stuff about God was second in priority to forming the community, cuz they would never mention any of the stuff in the bible that would make the congregation uncomfortable, and there was plenty of it in there.

Reading the bible made me kinda lose my faith a bit, I'm still in a state of limbo over that issue, to me it doesnt have all the answers in it, it seems more like a symbolic story than a literal one the way the church interprets it, maybe this is why catholics arent encouraged to do bible reading.

Didnt george bush use cocain? Regularly?...

I would consider using an illegal and dangerous substance, under full knowledge that it is illegal much worse than siding with one side of a war when you are a kid. Hey, take any older men with powerful positions in japan. Alot of them were straight up nazis to! Hey guess what, I bet you'll find a good number of old people in germany that had Nazi relations too!! Doesnt mean they all still beleive in it now, or that they even truly beleived in it back then.

What did you expect the pope to be some jewish war hero in the 1940s?

Well said. Lets (Americans) also not forget that many of our grandparents and other relatives likely supported the internment of Asians and their descendants during WW2. Or at best, they didnt speak out against it.

Our children may be saying similar things about us if the horrors of Guantanamo Bay are ever fully released. I'm not trying to define right or wrong, but it is so much easier to look at things like this with hindsight than to live through them in a way that people of the future will view as 'proper'.

that would be hilarious, a jewish war hero pope

I pretty much expected it would be an old white guy with a name taken from history.

I'm not trying to say I'm a Nazi, but if they controlled my country and I wanted to have a prosperous future, I would join the youth organization too. I mean, if you want to get ahead you gotta be where all the money and power is, that and I wouldnt wanna be excluded from society by not joining.

I'm glad I dont have to worry about making that decision today, its good that being a dirty raver is almost acceptable
