i'm with you on that one... that's what got me back into it after stopping for a few years. every time i went and saw some irish band i literally felt so guilty that i wasn't playing fiddle myself still that i finally picked it up again and taught myself irish folk music.

you should totally pick up some cheap mando at a pawn shop or something somewhere, and just work with it when you can. maybe get a better one (or something else altogether) after you'd played that for a while. everyone and their monkey plays guitar these days, its nice to play something different.
