I lived in an all-hardware realm until about 7-8 years ago and there a lot of times I've considered going back, so no, it's not preposterous IMO.
Anyway, here's more or less a minimum of what you'll need:
- synth(s)
- drum machine(s)
- sequencer (unless you plan on playing and recording everything in real-time)
- mixer
- effects (e.g., EQs, compressors, reverbs, delay or multi-FX)
- multi-track recorder
- monitors (audio)
- headphones (for tracking)
If you plan on recording vocals or other live instruments (e.g., recording a guitar amp), then you'll obviously need a microphone(s) and possibly preamp (although the mixer or multi-track recorder will probably have sufficient mic pres).
Also, many multi-track recorders have built-in effects and decent preamps, so that may negate the need for a mixer and outboard effects units.
Finally, there are some good workstation-style synths (e.g., Motif, Phantom, Kurz PC-series) that have built-in sequencers/arrangers and drums, so that could replace having a stand-alone sequencer and drum machine, and would also serve as a main controller (e.g., for rack hardware synths). Other options include something like an Akai MPC or E-mu Command Station.
So, really, there are a LOT of options in the h/w realm, but hopefully this list can point you in the right direction.
