Thanks to everyone for their advice, we ended up going to Algonquin. Man, what an amazing fucking trip! This was probably the most fun i've ever had during a long weekend. Memories for a lifetime, no doubt! Highlights of my first camping trip since childhood:
- going down the unlit highway, just past the Algonquin border, i saw a dark, giant figure standing in the middle of the road. We were going so fast and the figure appeared out of the darkness so quickly that my girl covered her face and screamed. It was a moose, a huge, huge moose just standing there, staring at our car, its green eyes reflecting the highbeams. Later on, we saw a female deer crossing the highway with a baby. I did a U-turn, stopped and put the newly-purchased searchlight (like the ones police cruisers have) to light up the area so that the other cars would see them in time to stop.
- we got to Algonquin at 2AM, instead of 6PM as originally planned. Using a computer printout map, the aforementioned searchlight and a huge machete (which i was glad i brought when i heard the wolves howling in the distance), me and my girl walked through the dark forest for an hour and a half before finally deciding to set up camp near a shallow river and a small waterfall. We got the tent up just before sunrise and, still shivering from the cold, fell asleep in eachothers arms. How we managed to pull this off is still a complete mystery to me.
- the next morning, we walked back to the car to get our food. We were starving, and decided to have breakfast on a nearby picnic table. A ranger arrived just as we got set up and informed us that we had to leave because we didn't have a permit. He gave us 90 minutes, or until 10:00PM to pack up our stuff and leave, or else he would have the car towed and us proscecuted for trespassing. I agreed and apologized for breaking the law.
- from here on now, things happened very quickly. I wasn't about to go back home, so before he even drove off, i already had a plan. We packed up everything we would need for the rest two days. These bags had to be immediately carried across a nearby bridge: out of sight, in case the ranger returned. On my way over the bridge, i spotted a family that was out for a walk. We didn't want any witnesses, so i made it a point to warn them that the west nile virus has returned (utter bullshit), and that walking near a river with a child and no moscuito repellant was very dangerous. I continued walking with a huge grin on my face, knowing that they'd be out of there in no time. My plan worked and they were gone. With the supplies safe across the river, we took a brisk walk around the nearby areas and found a great spot to hide the car. Wasting no time, i drove over the concrete barrier around the parking lot, and hid it in the bushes a short walk away. My girl ran after the car with two huge branches, covering up the tracks. A "be back soon" note was left on the dashboard, which was something i came up with to make the car look less suspicious in case someone stumbled into it. Two days later, we found the car exactly where we left it. The plan worked out perfectly.
- when we finally got back to our tent, i proceeded to make a huge fire using of the wood we gathered earlier that day (which was a good thing because it was 11PM by the time we got back). With the fire going strong, we grabbed a towel, some soap and a lantern, and headed to the river for a bath. This was simply amazing... with fire lighting the water from one side, and the lantern (sitting on a huge rock) from the other. We got out, dried up, boiled some coffee, smoked a joint, drank half a bottle of Absolut, grilled a two-pound hunk of beef over the fire, fucked eachothers brains out and fell asleep.
And that wraps up the first 24 hours of the 2-day trip. I REALLY have to sleep now, as i've got a seminar to wake up for in... 5? *sigh* hours. But yea, the trip was absolutely amazing and we'll definitely have memories for the rest of our lives because of some of the things that have happened. We're DEFINITELY doing this again real soon!
