Smoking ..umm..something Deep Dish at Axis, Boston on 7/12

Big names haven't been visiting Boston as frequently as they have in years past (I remember Avalon having a regular menu of Corsten, Tiesto, Oakenfold, Sasha & Digweed, PVD...those were the days), and I have been pretty disappointed by many of the shows that I've been to recently. I was beginning to think that my 3 months in London last summer spoiled me to the point that I wouldn't enjoy any U.S. shows again. Deep Dish changed all that - this was definitely one of the best shows I've seen in a while (G&D at Avalon last Sept/Oct was pretty fu**in awesome now that I think about it).

Large crowd for a Tuesday. By my eyes, they drew just about as many people as Digweed when he played at Axis on a Tues or Wed night a couple of months ago.

Axis, while not very luxurious by any stretch of the imagination, is a pretty cool place to see and act like Deep Dish IMHO. Unlike its larger sister club next door, Avalon, the the crowd is very close to the DJ. The atmosphere is also very dark, which I think creates a great music-listening experience.

I showed up at around 11:15, so I didn't get to see much of Ali, who started off the set. What I did hear from him was fairly low key and unrecognizable. However, things totally changed when Sharam took over. He started off with Motorcycle's "My Blue Heart", which really got the crowd going for the first time. The place went crazy when he threw down and extended version of "Flashing for Money". "Say Hello" got the respect it deserves, however, I was hoping to hear the Chus & Ceballos or Angello & Ingrosso remixes.

As you all know, Boston isn't a great place to see DJs due to it's strict 2:00 AM closing time. So I was very surprised by the fact that Deep Dish was allowed to play until about 2:20 AM. It was a very European crowd, and every time they stopped the music the entire place starting chanting that famous Ole...Ole, Ole, Ole...Ole...Ole football song in unison. No one would leave until they played another song. Finally, after two encores, the club turned on the master lights, indicating to everyone that no amount of chanting would extend the set any further.

Finally, I'm back into the groove.

Recognizable Songs (in relative order):
Motorcycle - My Blue Heart [1st song Sharam played when he took over - brought the set to a new level]
Deep Dish feat. Stevie Nicks - Dreams
Deep Dish - Flashing for Money [the club went nuts for this one]
Deep Dish - Say Hello (Extended Mix)
Terry Grant - I'll Kill You (Luke Chable Remix) [2nd to last song]
Coldplay - Speed of Sound (Steve Porter Remix) [last song before encores]
DONS feat Technotronic - Pump Up The Jam (Kurd Maverick a.k.a. Gian's Crowd Is Jumpin' Mix) [not a very impressive encore IMO]

Not sure about any other release right now, but Porter's remix is apparently appearing on Ultra.Trance 5 which comes out in the next couple months.
